Just noticed tonight that whenever I use research assistant with an indi such as McIntosh or Mckie the surname is forced to MACINTOSH or MACKIE. All McXXX surnames are the same. I don't think I ever noticed this behaviour before. I'm using svn 4593. Checked the raw gedcom and there's nothing in there to cause this.
Is this a bug or did someone decide to make this a "feature"?
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
Full: Captain Jack Sparrow
List: Sparrow, Captain Jack
Sort: SPARROW,JACK
The "Sort" name is only supposed to be used internally, not displayed. There is some special logic to sort Mc names along with Mac (as per scottish telephone directories).
I presume the RA code is extracting the surname from the "Sort" name.
I don't use the RA, so point me towards this bug and I'll take a look.

This is a bug.
Internally, we calculate 3 versions of each name:
Full: Captain Jack Sparrow
List: Sparrow, Captain Jack
Sort: SPARROW,JACK

Thanks Greg. Bug report filed with a URL. It's bug 2477484.
I really only use the search plugins from the tab on an indi page. I don't bother with tasks and such.
Fixed in SVN.
Works good now. Thanks for the fix Greg.
I have 4.2.2 installed and this issue still persists for me. My surname is McGrath and it appears as MACGRATH for the most common surname.
Is this a local thing I can fix?
Thanks
Paul
Its okay, I found this and I saw the other responses.
Makes sense and I can live with it.
