I'm thinking of getting a Synology NAS to let my family view photos over the interent.
I see they also have web server with PHP and MySQL so wondering if PhpGedView will run on it?
Any experience or comment most welcome.

My first thought is that for the cost of that device you could probably pay for a couple of years of real hosting service. Add to that the fact that most dsl/cable connections are much slower uploading than downloading so your family will likely not have very speedy access to the site. If you have an IP address that changes at all you will need a dynamic dns service also.
PGV is a fairly complex and resource intensive application. I see the specs for the device are a 500mhz processor and ram of either 64 or 128 megabytes. You might be able to run PGV but it will not be very fast at doing anything and some features probably will not work at all.
So it might be somewhat useable for sharing photos but it's doubtful that it would be much good with PGV. Despite how these things are marketed they are really meant more for letting you access your home data from elsewhere or sharing files inside a LAN.

Thanks for the thoughts - I'll have to do some more research. Perhaps scale my plans back to use just the basic photo sharing and find a cheap web host for PGV.

In my view such a device would even be over-kill for just photos; not to mention the complexities (and security / spam risks you'll need to manage) of running your own web server, which is effectively what this device would be.
Another thing to consider: If you get web hosting for PGV there's nothing to stop you using the same webhosting for photosharing also. There are plenty of free gallery programs out there and most of them are configurable with different security levels, etc.

Have you considered one of the many free photo storage sites, like google's Picasa?

Much less hassle.
