Can someone explain the basic difference between PGV in its present 4.2.3 form and Webtrees in its planned initial launch?
From what I gather in bits and pieces here and on the Webtrees site, Webtrees is sticking with MySQL, is moving some on-the-fly calculations into database tables, is basically in fact moving from a flatfile read/write premise to a full database premise, and is focused on the performance characteristics that go along with that. Beyond that the vision is opaque to me as are the quantitative advantages of the move. I'd sure like to know a bit more as I plan my next server move. I do realize the Webtrees project is probably in the normal early flux but what can be said at a high level?

Would not this question be better asked on the new webtrees forum, http://www.webtrees.net/forums ?? Responses might be viewed by some as an attempt to poach PGV admins/users.
Generally, your statements are factual. Since both programs offer online collaborative editing of genealogy family history files (GEDCOMs), it would be up to you to evaluate the features and navigation both programs offer, perhaps with a side-by-side installation. I would advise that you consider delaying any such comparison until the webtrees project is out of beta as there have already been over 1500 changes/additions/deletions/modifications to the PGV code and possible DB structure and stability issues remain before a stable release is contemplated (about 2 months, maybe less).
