Hi all,
I have the problem that I already have an unmarried mother and her not connected daughter in the database. I'm looking for a way to do this via interface, but I didn't found an easy one.
1. I have the opportunity to connect to an existing family. I didn't have one.
2. I have the opportunity to create a new mother with a new family. But then I have to merge the new mother with the existing one.
3. I could create a new husband for the mother with N.N. and then connect the daughter to this family. Not very clever.
I administer large gedcoms and it is not the first time I'm looking for an easy way in the direction to connect one person to another one and the family should be created automatically as it is working for a new person.
Is there some functionality missing?

A search will show that this is a common issue. The root is that GEDCOMs work with families. So there is a family even if there isn't an identified father. Usually people create a blank husband INDI just long enough to link the child, then delete the father again.

You are correct. Recent modifications to the code now allow creation/attachment of a parent and one child without creating the FAM unit first, EXCEPT in your situation. Here again is where the Quick Update form was ideal for resolving the situation. And here again (as I don't allow my users to see that form/method) is the reason we requested the RFE to configure the QU so that only Admins could use it. Thanks Gerry.
IINM, Until very recently, you could use the Quick Update, and simply navigate to ADD A WIFE/HUSBAND (spouse) tab, scroll down to ADD A CHILD and instead of typing in a new name, you could enter an existing person using the INDI ID# block. This was also true for adding a spouse, all similar to the INDI ID # entry blocks under the parents tab (Father unknown - Mother unknown). However these data entry/lookup blocks no longer appear under 4.2 in my installation. Maybe this is configurable, but I don't recall changing anything.
