For those interested, I have uploaded a program called GoShorPro. There is also a free program called GoShortURL. The "Pro" version (abt $25) allows you to assign an alias to a link.
Ggg-grandfather Gen. John Besser, instead of http://www.adkins9.net/individual.php?pid=I042, is now adkins9.net/go2/besser.
My Dad is now adkins9.net/go2/Dad, and a copy of an article from the Stars & Stripes in 1947 when my Dad took command of the 7700th TI&E in Germany is now adkins9.net/go2/7700TI&E, instead of http://search.ancestry.com/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1136&iid=miusa1942d_066134-00442&rc=2075,1785,2139,1805;1952,1875,2016,1895;2076,1877,2173,1896;799,2903,859,2919;1379,3025,1439,3042&pid=22232&ssrc=pt_t3013007_p-1788517488_g32768_r_h_l&fn=John+Ellsworth&l.

You don't explain 'how' you allocate these shorter URLs, but is it any quicker then the well used 'TinyURL' site? I have a simple link to that on my toolbar (available from tinyurl.com). One click from the page I want gets an instant new url. For example, If I go to your father's article, click my toolbar link, I get: http://tinyurl.com/ngs3d2
No need for any mods to PGV, nor any uploaded programme.

I set up a directory for "go2" on my adkins9.net domain with the software installed. During installation, it builds a database for the redirects. When you access, for example, www.adkins9.net/go2/Dad, the program pulls that link and redirects to http://www.adkins9.net/individual.php?pid=I007. The software is set up to tell me if a "requested alias" is not available or it can append extra characters. However, I could have any number of "tiny-URL's" all directing to the same OR different URL's.
If you download the free version, all your "tiny-URL's" will have your domain and be random 4-6 character links. The purchase version allows the "requested alias," a database view/edit function, ability to redirect or obfuscate "mailto:" addresses, etc. The speed is the same as any other redirect.
It is password protected (to eliminate spamming) but you can see the "long form" at http://www.adkins9.net/go - I'll email you the password separately.
I have single names I associate with many of my family and ancestors, so now I can just enter www.adkins9.net/go2/betsy, www.adkins9.net/go2/bogardus, etc. VERY handy tool.

You still need to take care when giving people those links. Try clicking on your own link to your Dad's page in your last forum post. It actually only takes you to your Welcome page, not the INDI page. Took me a moment or two to figure out that its because you have a comma (',') attached to the end of the short url, so it fails the lookup in your DB.
Its an interesting solution, but not something I feel I need spend $25 on, and the free version does little more than tinyurl.com, whcih doesn't need any storage locally.
Thanks for the info though.

It would be nice to keep the GEDCOM name out of the URL, though. The links work just fine without it; is there an option that I haven't set properly that might eliminate this? I'm pretty sure I did specify that I wasn't using multiple GEDCOMs at one point, but this was a while ago.

Sometimes when I send a link, such as: http://www.adkins9.net/individual.php?pid=I1981&ged=Adkins.GED
I will shorten it (since I only have one GED) to: http://www.adkins9.net/individual.php?pid=I1981
Some of the links can be rather long, so instead of:
http://www.adkins9.net/relationship.php?ged=Adkins.GED&pid1=I001&pid2=I1981&pretty=2&followspouse=1
I will use a "tiny URL" such as: http://xrl.in/2rcv
Is there a routine that can "shorten" the links that could be incorporated into PGV? Would anyone be interested? Would the effort be justified? If there is enough interest, I will submit as a Feature Request.. Your thoughts?

Right & right.
