Last Minute Christmas Optimization Is your website ready for the holiday rush? You may already know some of the more standard ways to optimize your site for your new products or special deals: updated content, updated title and description tags, and new product pages. What you may not know is that it can take search engines up to six weeks to index these changes. In order to catch the first wave of holiday shoppers you need to have any new pages or content updates live on your site in October. ..But what if you waited to add your new pages and content until the last minute? Is there hope for e-retailers who wait to optimize their site when Christmas is only weeks away? In a word: Yes. When it comes to optimization theres always something you can do while you wait for search engines to pick up your new pages, content, and title tags. First, take advantage of the pages you have that are already ranking well and use them to place text-based links to the pages that contain products or deals you want to push for holiday sales. Remember to take advantage of the anchor text for these links and use them for keyword phrases related to your product. Make sure you place links for products on pages that are somehow associated with the product this is the kind of thing that Google likes to see. If you put a link to a page about pearl earrings on a page about pearls and use Pearl Earrings for the anchor text of that link, Google will see that link as more relevant than, say, a link to the pearl earrings page on a page about beach balls with Click Here for the anchor text. Dont be afraid to use your homepage for links, either, since this is likely (and rightfully so) the most important page on your site according to the search engines. Along with this you can install a custom 404 error page. Rather than have the 404 error page go to your site map or homepage (as many of these pages do) you can have it point to a page with your Christmas specials. That way youre not only keeping visitors who type in the wrong URL in your site, youre making sure they see what you really want them to see. Remember: Its never too late to optimize your site, no matter what the season. To unsubscribe, send an email to: uns...@up... with the address: php...@li... in the subject line. |
