Is there a better set of notes somewhere? well, configuring the new phpesp requires some getting used to, so read the INSTALL doc as well, it explains in detail how to configure the new system ("3. Configuring phpESP"). You might want to test a "fresh" install first, so as to understand the config part (which is in fact very simple, but being different from 1.8.2 ...). An example config is provided (admin/phpESP.ini.php.example), just rename it to admin/phpESP.ini.php, and change what is needed (the defaults are found in admin/phpESP.ini.php.default, but don't change that file). The database upgrade is done automatically after you update the files to the new version (and configured the new version). See the bottom part ("UPDATING DATABASE") in the UPDATE doc. Franky |

Hi, looking at upgrading a live survey using version 1.8.2 to the latest version. Needless to say being live and in production one needs to be more than a little careful. The Upgrade file just states the following: $ cd /usr/local/www/htdocs $ mv phpESP phpESP.old $ tar -zxf /path/to/phpESP-1.6.tar.gz $ mv phpESP-1.6 phpESP ... configure phpESP 1.6 ... ... update database ... ... test phpESP 1.6 ... $ rm -rf phpESP.old LInes 1 through 4 - no problems. But lines 5 and 6 aren't the most descriptive of "How". Is there a better set of notes somewhere? Alison PS. Couldn't find any facility to search the archived notes from this list. |

Thanks for putting up with me Franky! Sorry, I'm Cpanel only so I didn't really understand what you were talking about when you wrote "execute the sql statement" (though for a while there I was ready to execute my computer!!!) Without the terminology for cpanel I'm pretty lost. Alls well that ends well. Thank you again! eheh :-) That was also what I said (the admin vs root mail before), and since you used phpmyadmin to enter the code manually, that might indeed be the encoded version for "esp" :-) The sql query should've done the same ... But again: where does this "admin" user come from? It took a long time but finally I worked it out. You do have to revert to root but in the mysql database for password you have to enter 7bb357162158ed46 which is code for esp. I was then able to get into my old files! Dear Franky and all, Thank you again! Sorry, I did what you said Franky, however still no luck. I'm wondering if I can set up a new instance and move the information from the old databases to the new instance so I can access the information? regards, eric |

Hi Eric, no, don't delete the whole phpesp_designer section. Just use phpmyadmin (or whatever you have at your disposal), go to your database and into the phpesp_designer table and remove the one line that mentions the admin user. Then execute the sql statement: INSERT INTO phpesp_designer (username, password, fname, lname, realm, pdesign, pstatus, pdata, pall, pgroup, puser, disabled) VALUES ('root', PASSWORD('esp'), 'ESP', 'Superuser', 'superuser', 'Y', 'Y', 'Y', 'Y', 'Y', 'Y', 'N') If you're unsure, give me the phpmyadmin access and I'll change it for you. Hello there Franky, many thanks for taking the time to share your experience. It is greatly appreciated. Sorry, just to be sure I understand, do you want me to: delete / drop the phpesp_designer section (whole thing) from the database and remake it? Or do you want me to click on the structure button of the phpesp_designer section, delete / drop just the admin user line and add a new admin line, followed by the other info you mentioned, Or do you want me to just type over the old admin user name (didn't work previously). in regard the esp password, can that be typed just as "esp" or is there a string of characters for code? Sorry to bother, but I don't want to make things any worse! Thank you again, Kind regards, Eric |

This should be fine, but the password maybe not. To be sure, do this in phpmyadmin: - delete the admin user from the designer table- - execute the following statement in phpmyadmin (all on one line): INSERT INTO designer (username, password, fname, lname, realm, pdesign, pstatus, pdata, pall, pgroup, puser, disabled) VALUES ('root', PASSWORD('esp'), 'ESP', 'Superuser', 'superuser', 'Y', 'Y', 'Y', 'Y', 'Y', 'Y', 'N') After that, the user "root" exists with password "esp", as superuser. Btw: it's a bit weird, but the default administrator user is "root", not "admin". Did you change this? Sorry to keep bugging you all but I'm also wondering if the collation in the tables should be latin1_swedish_ci (Swedish case insensitive)? That is what it is at the moment. Seems a little strange. Should it not be UTF-8? Still searching for answers - perhaps grabbing at straws??? Thank you again. Regards, Eric |

Thank you again Alison, Unfortunately though, still no luck. I put a variety of different names in the admin and the code you gave me in password. Clicked save. But each time I still get the same "incorrect username or password" error message. I've cleared cookies in the browser and restarted the browser a few times too to check that. Still no luck. If anyone has some ideas, I would be most grateful. Kind regards, Eric |

Eric, the Username isn't encrypted, and as such should just be "admin". Only the password is encrypted. Alison At 09:22 AM 1/02/2009, you wrote: >Many thanks Alison for this. I did as you said. Hi Eric, everything you are doing is correct, but simply entering a password into the designer table won't work as in all probability it's encrypted in some way. Try entering the following:- *4ACFE3202A5FF5CF467898FC58AAB1D615029441 Cut and paste it. If successful it should give you a password of "admin". Alison PS. you need the asterisk at the beginning. Thank you again for your reply. I'm not sure if I'm doing things correctly, but this is what I did. I entered into my cpanel. Entered into the MySQL database, at the bottom of that page is the PHP MyAdmin. I clicked there. I clicked the subdomain on the left that is holding phpesp. The list of tables appears. I clicked the "browse" button beside the "phpesp_desiner" table. I clicked the "edit" button of that table. I entered in a new user name and password. I clicked "go" where the "save and return to previous screen" button is. I went to try and log into my site, but still could not. Am I not doing something correctly here? Not sure if you can help - but if so, I would be most grateful. Kind regards, Eric |

Sorry, I didn't update either. My set up was similar to Eric's. I hadn't made any changes to the php script and the only change seemed to have been the MySQL update. I managed to get my information by accessing the MsSQL database and pulling the fields apart one by one. My hosting company were no help (stating that nothing had changed and it must be the code rather than their end) and I have gone with Googledocs (with another provider) now. Hardly ideal (as I really liked phpESP) but as I am only really a user, rather than someone who actually knows what they are talking about, it seemed the best option. To solve this, use phpmyadmin (or anything alike) to reset the password for the root user (use the mysql PASSWORD function for this). It is weird though, normally I take this into account ...
