I was wondering if there were any plans to include advanced single winner election methods in your software, allowing a true group preference to be found when three or more options exist. The particular methods I am most interested in are Approval Voting and Condorcet (ranked) Voting. For more information on these methods, I would suggest checking out: http://electionmethods.org/ http://www.alumni.caltech.edu/~seppley/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condorcet_method http://approvalvoting.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approval_voting |

Well up until the latest patch for IE there was a easy way to do this.=20 You could simply do this: http://user:pas...@ww.../public/survey.php?name=3Dfoo But since Microsoft decided to remove that functionality from IE and most people use IE, it's no longer an option. Without writing some code yourself, it's not really doable now. It's in the docs "phpESP/docs/INSTALL" and has been mentioned many times on this list. root/esp are the defaults. On Wed, 2004-02-25 at 13:06, Jeremy D. Hello all, Just installed phpesp 1.6.1 and everything went well. The only problem is it's asking for a username/password and I don't know what it is, nor do the docs hint at a default login for the system. So my questions is - what's the default user/login? Thanks, Jeremy |

I do not think it is phpESP you should blame. Most likely it's apache and/or hostname configuration on the new computer. Dear all: Now I am working on development of the phpESP. We are trying to add some new modules on it. Yesterday I tried to use from my computer the same phpESP (with the same configuration) installed on another computer via LAN. Every time I was writing the IP address of that computer, it automatically was changing to "localhost" and opening phpESP installed on my computer. By the way, I succeed when I tried to get connected to the server on that computer. Why phpESP behaves this way? Best regards, Tigran Matevosyan |

Gregg: hi. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Indeed by changing the configuration options for use authentication in the phpESP.ini.php file I was able to resolve the problem. Silly me, I had not changed the MySQL database details! With that change in place, the problem is resolved. Here is a log of the problem and solution. Probably very basic for most phpESP users, but if a newbie stumbled in installation, this might help: Installing phpESP on a webserver running PHP in Apache module instead of CGI Problem: After uploading the software, and going to the admin directory > http://...../phpESP/admin/ > an popped up {Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request} A quick check of test.php showed > PHP information > .... > SAPI: cgi > ..... Gregg informed me that the problem is that phpESP requires PHP to be running in CGI mode. The work around to get it working on PHP running in Apache module is to disable the authentication in the phpESP.ini.php file in the admin directory. The two lines that I changed were the following: > // Use authentication for designer interface (I changed it from true > to false) (BOOLEAN) > $ESPCONFIG['auth_design'] = false; > > // Use authentication for survey responders (I changed it from true to > false) (BOOLEAN) > $ESPCONFIG['auth_response'] = false; > > Then, i created a database one my webserver, and changed the information related to the MySQL host, the username, the password and database name in the same file. Uploading this file to the admin directory and going back to http://....phpESP/admin this time brought up the phpESP management page. Problem solved. One additional problem remains: Protecting the admin directory using htaccess. To protect the admin directory, i used one of the many htaccess password generators available freely on the web. the one i used is http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/htaccess-generator.shtml One generates a script for "htaccess" and an encripted password for the "htpasswd" file using the generator. Both files are saved as text files locally, and uploaded in ASCII format to the admin directory. Once there, the files are renamed to include a "period" before the file name and removal of .txt suffix [ .htaccess and .htpasswd ] which renders the files invisible. The admin directory is now password protected. Thanks for your help. -Sunil |

Gregg: Thank you for your suggestion. I am a PHP newbie so am having difficulty following your suggestion. In the phpESP.ini.php file, I changed the following lines from true to false but to no avail. // Use authentication for designer interface (BOOLEAN) $ESPCONFIG['auth_design'] = false; // Use authentication for survey responders (BOOLEAN) $ESPCONFIG['auth_response'] = false; I still get the same error message. Heres the URL http://www.jayateas.com/phpESP/admin/ If you have any suggestions, I would be grateful. I looked through the past postings and this issue seems to pop up quite a bit. But no one has posted a definitive workaround yet, or at least I haven't seen one. Thanks in advance. Text/Essay fields that contain commas import just fine into Excel, OpenOffice and Gnumeric. You can either import as CSV into one of these tools, then re-export or add functionality to ESP to allow tab-delimited exports. Greetings -- Surveys can include text boxes, and the text entered may include commas. This is currently not handled in any special way -- in contrast, quotation marks within entered text are escaped. I'd like to get tab-delimited export instead -- does anyone know how to achieve that? In which phpESP control file is the delimit character set? Cheers, David |

I think the only thing your ISP isn't offering is PHP running as an Apache module instead of CGI. The "SAPI: cgi" tells me this. You can still run phpESP like this, but none of it's authentication works. You would need to disable logins to the management interface, this is done in phpESP.ini.php and only use public surveys. I would setup an .htaccess to protect the management interface from unauthorized users. Dear all: I have just learned about phpESP and was thrilled to see an open source project to help with surveys. However, as soon as I tried to install it, I ran into problems. Apparantly, my webhost does not support several features, and I wanted to know if there are work arounds that could overcome these issues. You can get the data in other formats by exporting as CSV into something like Excel or Gnumeric and then re-exporting in the format you need. Or if you know Perl, several module exist to munge CSV. If you're a novice with SQL, I would advice against attempting direct access to ESP's tables. > Cheers, > David > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > SF.Net is sponsored by: Speed Start Your Linux Apps Now. > Build and deploy apps & Web services for Linux with > a free DVD software kit from IBM. Greetings -- I kept a detailed account of what I had to do to get phpESP running on a Debian sid system and would be happy to post it somewhere for reference. I'm thrilled to have phpESP running -- it's working great. I still haven't figured out the part about restricting access by login; is there a more detailed account somewhere? I'm also wondering about input masks. I created some surveys in perl at one point and recall I had highly specific input masks to ensure data integrity. I don't see this in phpESP -- even if you say a field should be 2 long it accepts any length. Or am I missing something? Has anyone looked into putting detailed masks on, say "numbers between 18 and 90" or at least "2-digit integers"? Finally, is there a way of setting the value for the delimiter, currently a comma, for data export? Out of curiosity, is it in principle possible to use some kind of MySQL GUI to view the data and export directly from mysql? I'm a complete novice with mysql. Cheers, David |

Sorry to bother everyone -- I solved it. It seems to have been a matter of the /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so module not being loaded after all. Don't quite know how it happened.
