A database abstraction layer would be very helpful, so
people can use their own preferred database (e.g. I use
postgreSQL).

Check the change log etc... ADODB is used and supported.
Check the scripts/db directory initial db creation scripts
for postgres are available.
Help testing postgres is welcome.
