[phpesp-general] having trouble with http-authentication

I'm doing a fresh installation of phpesp for a new project and I am
having quite a bit of trouble with http-authentication.

I don't think the method that is being used by phpesp is combatible
with my web host. I've setup phpesp before and never had this problem.

basically with a fresh installation, the username and password to
access the /admin/manage.php page should be:

root
esp

this isn't working on my new installation. i keep getting kicked back
to the authentication dialogue.

is it possible to turn off authentication via a setting one of the
config or library files for phpesp?
