Could you please post the text message you get with the 500 error? Also set DEBUG => TRUE in your phpESP.ini, and see if it gives any more information. And if you have access to the httpd "error-log" please take a look at it and see if there is any more information there. If the 500 error is from Apache directly, then it may be a few things (check matched quotes etc where you edited files).
