Uploading in binary mode did not make any difference.  I took the second option so I could finish the upgrade.  My FTP client is WS-FTP Pro and generally very reliable in matters such as this.  Does the checksum depend on file date or time? If it does that's the problem since the server controls that, I cannot.

Also, if you don't want users to be able to change the .fixed file then this will never be usable:

Hmmm ... probably your ftp client changed the line endings in that
file, they tend to do that.
I've put that check in to make sure people didn't change the content of
those files, but I didn't think of ftp clients ...

You have two options:
- either disable that option in your ftp client (try to upload all
files in binary mode)
- or disable the test in admin/manage.php (comment out the lines that
say "check_checksum", line 43 and 44)

I would recommend the first solution though ...
