For the record I'm using mldonkey 2.4.0 with phpEselGui cvs as of Mon May 
12 16:30 US Central.

Just to clarify the controller log starts out this way:

2003-05-12 18:58:28 - Start function isActive ("127.0.0.1", "4000")
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - Opening telnet-client
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - telnet-client has been opened
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - returning ""
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - Start function printBWStats
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - Start function askDonkey for bw_stats
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - Opening telnet-client
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - Telnet-client has been opened
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - Starting bw_stats
2003-05-12 18:58:28 - donkey-response: ""

With the last line repeated over and over until the browser times out.
