I have created a department, and a group. But when i add a new item, i see the "department" pulldown, but the "Group of items" pulldown is always blank, and i never see the item in my shop?

Please create a second department with its own itemgroup and it should work ;-)

(Problem is here Javascript in combination with some browsers i.e. InternetExplorer. If you choose a department on right pulldown its itemgroups appear - so far the plan. In IE this works only, if you have at least two departments and you can change selected entry. In Konqueror2 it works with one entry, when this one is selected again ... )

Ok, that seems to work. But, uhm, should it be like that? And what is the "clean" way to set upp departments / categories and items so the end result looks "neat"?

What do you mean with 'neat'? I understand the word itself, but that's relative ;-)

Oh, i mean. How do i tell people how to work around it? "Create a category with a group in it, and then hide it, to work around a "bug" "

I think, that's only a problem in a test enviroment. In real  noone has only one department.
But you are right, this is a bug, which has to fixed.

Yes, but, uhm.. Aha, so if you HAVE more then one department, all departments will be visible? As in, i thought yo umeant that the first departmets groups never were visible?

No, I told not of empty department-pulldown. Of course all departments ever visible, but their itemgroups are inserted via Javascript into the right (=itemgr) pulldown.

Itemgr-fill'in starts if Javascript-event 'onchange' is.
If you have only ONE department the JavaScript-event 'onchange' never comes i.e in InternetExplorer. That's why itemgr-pulldown keeps empty.

      Greetings,
      Andreas.
