So, essentially, free as in beer and not as in freedom?

    • Brandon Husbands

Yeah Free as in beer =)

with the XDNS system we need to make sure all code is compatable. Basically we just wanna Approve modifications before they are distributed. Basically alot of this software needs to be identical for the networked portion to work.

Would you mind detailing this whole networked thing? It sounds interesting, but you haven't given many details as to what exactly it will do yet.

Heh, XDNS is a very classifed project which I am the owner of. It holds its own license and its on schemas. Basically XDNS is used to interconnect software to make it transparent across sites. Allowing for sharing of resources and data.

so basically you want to be able to force ads onto everyones pages... am i correct? or is it see how many people sign up? perhaps what colors they are using... so a free marketing study... very clever.

I don't know of any responsible webmaster who would agree to such an outlandish liscense.

First, no responsible webmaster is going to give you carte blanche to deliver whatever content you want on their website. Their name is on the site. They pay the hosting. They are legally liable for the sites content, and they are going to give you the right to expose their visitors to whatever you deem acceptable ... in whatever form you decide while they are legally liable for the unknown content. No way.

Second. A webmaster invests their money, time, blood, sweat, and tears in building and promoting a popular site, after giving you the right to shut it down just because you want to ... or don't pay your bills ... or decide to use your proprietary Xdns to redirect their visitors to another site that you or a favored third party owns (think brother, cousin, nephew, or BUYER).

      Right!

If you are really looking for wide exposure on the Internet for your script, it would be really helpful if you rethought your strategy in terms of win-win-win. You win-the webmaster wins-the visitors win.

As it is now, it's hooray for you and to hell with everyone else ... provided anyone is gullible or short-sighted enough to agree to your terms.

I think you just killed your project.

      My $.02

Well thanks for your $.02 but.... the fact of the matter is we would have to run the XDNS hub so we would have to pay bills as well. Our ads would be in one position only and that allows for the program to be free... or you have the alternative... people have to pay for the program and get no ads. We are trying to make the ability to interconnect for free. Have a better idea?

To be honest, this is one of the reasons that I am no longer even so much as mentioning your previous fork around my side of town. Yes, your main dev has helped me alot, but your license is, well... embarassing to me as well, as I am noted as the original author before the fork, and subsequent rewrite.

John, I suppose you could try the software this is forked off of. No names as I'm not into advertising, but look around and you'll see.

PS -- You still haven't explained what exactly XDNS is... mind elaborating? You've got a lot of people waiting around for this product (me not being one of them, of course!), and I think they'd be interested. From a developers standpoint, I also would be -- mind elaborating?

Wow, our company is looking into the open source community to use said softwares as we feel allowing the core developers to make their $$ from support of the product, sadly the above mentioned license is just wrong, not sure how you can justify changing a license from GPL to Xotmid.

I agree with the above comments, cold day in hell I would allow you to place ads on my client sites without a method of control to the ads. or what ever backdoor process yoou feel is cool...

Just lost my attempt at testing/using/paying/recommending your product.

Grow-up if you are going to swim in the adult pool...
