As far as I am aware, it's because it's stable. And as far as I know there aren't any working alternatives. Resin was close, but trashed my mail server. However, it's been at least 4 years since I tested that or any other bridge.
PHP/JB works very well for what I use it for, so I've had no need of any updates or alternatives.
