I have installed on Linux 64 bit. I ran into several issues on the way, but 
this is new on me.

Yes.

Just use the pure Java implementation. 

>From looking at the source code I've got the impression that the C code doesn't compile anyway. At least not for PHP 5 or PHP 6.

The pure Java/PHP implementation runs on all operating systems.  -- The bridge may need JDK 1.6 to
compile, but it runs on all Java implementations since 1.4.

That's an old autoconf test which checks if JNI is available. If not, the bridge uses
local TCP sockets or named pipes.

the C code does compile on Linux (Debian and RedHat, at least). 

It may not compile or run on Windows. But that's a minor problem as you can always use the pure
Java/PHP implementation, which is as fast as (and under some circumstances even faster than) the C
code.
