The above problem goes away when you distclean the php
directory and remove all references to the old
ext/java bridge and then re-build.

I have compiled the bridge with TCP sockets directly
into PHP 4.3.9 and compiled it into a CGI binary. As
far as I can tell, the bridge works as it should.
