Jost - Thanks for your reply, but sorry to report that it resulted in 
exactly the same symptoms. So no joy!
I did a fresh download of Tomcat 6 and placed it in a separate 
directory, stopped my original version, started the new version, 
followed the instructions as previously described and got exactly the 
same servlet exception error...
