The control sequence "\thisrowno" is not defined in the 'x/y/z expr=' value , if the table was loaded using \pgfplotstableread and is accessed via "from \tablename".
Thank you for reporting the issue! I've just written the missing control sequence. It'll be part of the next bugfix release (stable branch).
