Hi,
when I try to compile the first node example on p. 80
of the pgf manual I get lots of errors starting with
! Package tikz Error: Unknown shape ``rectangle.''
Using ``rectangle'' instead.
See the tikz package documentation for explanation.
Type H <return> for immediate help.
...
l.8 -- (0,2) node {third node};
This error message was generated by an \errmessage
command, so I can't give any explicit help.
Pretend that you're Hercule Poirot: Examine all clues,
and deduce the truth by order and method.
...
Admittedly, I'm new to TikZ and installed pgf v0.96
into the localtexmf tree without removing the old one
in texmf. So if you can't reproduce this error, please
let me know. Though, other examples without nodes
compile fine.
I appended source and log file.

Sorry, after deinstalling the old pgf version the example
compiles fine. I thought the files in localtexmf should take
precedence over that in texmf.

I can observe the same bug using texlive 2004

Hi!
closing this report.
Note on who should take precedence: If pgf is put in the generic part of
the local tree, the *latex* stuff will still first be looked for in the latex
branch of the global tree, only second in the local generic tree (where
they are not "expected"). The solution is to create a symbolic link in
localtexmf/tex/latex/pgf to localtexmf/tex/generic/pgf/latex/pgf.
Best regards,
Till
