Can you run it with the command line option "-D 0" and "-d"

  so "./personalbackupd -D 0 -d"

What will happen is that personalbackupd will not detach and all messages 
are printed on the commandline
Normally this should shed some light on the issue.

Hmm... that does not seem to be correct. You should see a page what title 
"PersonalBackup center <your sitename>"
