Things are pretty primitive still, but I like where you seem to be going with this. Since you are effectively using solid geometry, it would probably look better if the models were simply built from closed primitives, N64 style. Unless the plan is to eventually figure out a stitching algorithm with the open hulls or something.

Your concept reminds me a bit of two old games: Fighter Maker for the Playstation (which allowed users to animate game characters by keyframe), and Die By The Sword (Treyarch's groundbreaking dynamic/interactive animation system). You should give those a look if you aren't already familiar with them. Particularly the former, and it's PS2 sequel. There are a lot of aspects of the animation UI and control schemes you might want to emulate, or improve upon.
