I'm personally not too sure persistentperl/speedycgi has a future. Please
don't quote me on this as I'm not sure of it's accuracy, but the last
conversations I had with a Linux group (comprising of various Linux users
babbling about Linux), I remember one guy mentioning that the developer of
pperl was now employed by Zend (who make commercial grade products for php,
including an optimiser) and that being the case, was not allowed to continue
development on pperl.
As with any such group discussions, there may be people that know about things
and others talking from their rear end, he may have even confused the author
of pperl with the author of turck-mmcache.
Either way, I've personally not been able to confirm what he said through
google searches. The developer is on this list, maybe he can clarify?
