Hey, Glad it is working (mostly) for you. Festival is using /dev/dsp for output. I am assuming that you DO get voice response when the listener is NOT turned on. I think I may know what is going on if this is the case. Can you run two sound programs at the same time? Say xmms and noatun playing two different songs? If not, then your sound card does not multiplex, which means that only one program can stream to it at a time. So Festival get blocked from the sound card, because festival doesn't dominate the soundcard, but sphinx does because it monitors constantly. This is my understanding anyway. Now, you might have some duplexing, like two programs can output at the same time, but the input is blocked. Start by recording (like krecord) and then open a music file (xmms). I am not an expert on sound cards, but it could be a kernel module setting on your driver, or maybe the sound card does not support multiplexing. You can find this out through google. I am interested to hear what you learn. I do not know as much about all of this as I wish, but maybe I was of some help. Good luck, Shane |

Your program is working (to my great delight), although I am having some minor problems. When I have the listener listening I do not get the voice response back from program. I watched the konsole while speaking to the listener (verbose set to 10) and I get alot of "cannot open /dev/dsp" errors. Is this why I do not have the voice response? Is it because Sphinx2 or Festival is using the /dev/dsp? It does how ever open all programs listed in the vocab pain, even the ones I have added. I am using the Creative SoundBlaster AWE32 as my sound card. Thank you for your help in advance... Dear friend, I am soliciting your confidence in this business; this is because of its nature as being utterly confidential and top secret. Though, I know that a business of this sort will make any one apprehensive and worried, but I am assuring you that this transaction is safe. I am Mr. Vincent Kawa, a Credit Officer with Oceanic Bank of Nigeria. For the cause of this transaction, I am working in collaboration with Barrister, Ikimi Williams an attorney to a national of your country, Mr. Ailing Lazarus who was a ship Merchant and maintained a bogus account with my bank here. My cordial relationship with him afforded me to be the account supervisor. I came to know you in my private search for a reliable and reputable person to handle this confidential transaction, which involves the transfer of his abandoned huge sum of money to a foreign account requiring maximum confidence. I have decided to contact you due to the urgency of this transaction. Ever since Mr. Ailing Lazarus traveled, he has not made any contact with me, the attorney or any body that we know since April 2001. Valuable efforts have been made by the attorney to get in touch with him or relatives but to no success. The assumption that Mr. Ailing must have been dead is confirmed by the attorney on his inability to follow up all pressing transactions then, which all of them have been terminated. I have contacted you or any person you know that is capable to work with me as a next of kin irrespective of same surname or not. This is in the light of a government financial regulation order, to freeze any account containing huge sums of money that has been dormant for a less than the period of time we are talking about. The bank has made arrangement for the fund to be declared unclaimed and subsequently be donated to the government trust fund. To forestall a total loss, the attorney has agreed with me to put the modalities I am proposing to you now in place, to manage the fund and bring it to safe point until we are able to trace or decide further what to do. I now seek your permission to have you stand as the next of kin so that the fund $8.2M (Eight Million point two US Dollars) will be released and paid into your account as the beneficiary's next of kin. All documents and proves to enable get this fund will be carefully worked out. I found it more convenient to commence on the transaction since I have all information to influence all procedures to this effect both from the bank and from the attorney's assistance. We are assuring you that your Involvement in this business is 100% risk free. Moreover this arrangement will be possible under the mandatory power of probate claims to be issued by the attorney, who is standing by us in this transaction to see what we can keep out of the lot that would have been confiscated and wasted by the government . You shall retain a percentage that would be agreed between us while the rest will be in our care for investment purposes. As soon as I receive an acknowledgement of receipt of this message in acceptance of our mutual business proposal, I would furnish you with the necessary modalities and disbursement ratio to suit both parties without any conflict including every other detail you may wish to know. If this proposal is acceptable by you, do not take undue advantage of the trust we have bestowed in you. On receiving your reply, I shall give you a call to finalize all arrangements for a hitch free transaction. Regards, Mr Vincent Kawa CC please copy to vi...@in... |

Hi Everyone, Perlbox Voice for Gnome is ready for pre release. The package has been created and uploaded. As per our discussion, this release utilizes the perl archiver, so any system with base perl and a gnome installation should be able to run it without downloading a bunch of modules. I suppose we will find out if this is true or not. The source code will be available from the cvs repository in a day or so. To find out more, visit http://perlbox.org/gnome. There will be a link to the download. Please, run it, see how it works. When you have a feel for it, post a message to this discussion about any problems or successes you had (remember to include information about your machine (OS, architecture etc). Well, good luck everyone, and thank you for your time and effort. Shane Mason |

Well, I have been thinking about a tentative release date for perlbox-voice-gtk.0.01 and I keep thinking December 27. The reasoning behind this is that people will be home from work still, but not so busy from Christmas that they can't take a little time to check out a cool new piece of software! Here is what we have right now: Command execution is completed (meaning, you say it and it does it) Vocabulary Editing: New vocabularies can be generated on the fly (the whole process takes less than a second for a 20 command/response vocabulary. It seems pretty robust too. Speech Synthesis: Using Festival, perlbox-voice talks back to you! It is sooo easy! When the program starts, this robot voice says: "perlbox-voice for GTK is starting up" and when you click "Start Listener" the voice says "The listener is awake" after sphinx starts. If you kill the listener, or if it just dies, it says "The listener has left the building" When you speak a command and it is understood the voice says "Command executed is XXXX" where XXXX is the command. If it did not understand, it says "What? I heard you say XXXX" where XXXX is what it though it heard. So, there is a lot of potential here for cool features in the future. We are missing documentation and the configuration options tab. Packaging is a major issue also. (It should be noted that the general configuration is well under control though using Config::Simple and many of the modules are dependent on that structure, We just need to hook the interface configuration tab up to the conf file. It is really a simple thing) If anyone out there is not up to speed, and wants more information on what is going on, just reply to this or email me personally at me...@pe.... If we are going to meet the Dec 27 date, we will need a little help, so if anyone has any free time... Shane C. Mason |

In anticipation of the first release of perlbox-voice for GTK looming over our head, I have completely redone the website again! Check it out at http://perlbox.sourceforge.net. In the next couple of days the name servers will point perlbox.org traffic there, so I hope to have feedback before then. Please review the spelling! Shane Mason |

Hi, That is a strange message, one I have not seen. It seems like something more indicative of sphinx's dealing with the audio channels than anything else. Maybe the listener, sphinx, install has become corrupted. Hmmm. This may seem like a hack way to do it, but I have posted a new version of perlbox on the sourceforge site, http://perlbox.sourceforge.net Maybe you could download and install that into a new directory, which will install the listener also. Test this new version. If it works, then you can tranfer your configuration from the old install to the new install just by moving the configuration directory from the old install to the new install, if you want. I am interested to see if this might solve the problem. At any rate, I am glad to know that you have been using perlbox, and thank you for informing me of this problem. I will look through the sphinx documentation to see if I can find a better solution. Thanks Shane Mason On Sat, 16 Nov 2002, Kenneth Wolf wrote: > Hi, I've been using PerlBox for about 6 months now and I've finally hit a > wall > > When I start the listener I get the message: > > "Audio ioctl(SPEED) not perfect, but is acceptable. Hi everyone, I have posted a pdf outlining the proposed interface. It can be found at this link: http://perlbox.sourceforge.net/docs/pbox_ui_design_v1.pdf Since we are currently considering the subscribers of this list to be the governing body of perlbox, I will consider this official notice of this proposed interface change. If there are objections, questions or concerns, they should be addressed quickly. If there are none, development using this interface will continue in the next day or so. In the meantime, we will focus on internal classes. Thanks Shane C. Mason me...@pe... |

I propose that the current interface for perlbox-voice-gtk is completely rewritten, using glade, to incorporate a greater level of human interaction. In that: the person can help to train the system. In order to accomplish this, perlbox-voice must have a keener level of sophistication than simply an interpreter. To give you some idea of where I am going with this: we include a learner that can help to correct mistakes in the listeners ability to translate longer commands. This product needs to engage the user at some level higher than is currently allowed for. More on this later. Just thoughts for now, I will post a new diagram this weekend and get the cvs set up. Well, we have a working list! What else? We now have a Task List at the sourceforge site! This is an incomplete list, but it is started and growing. This list will be fairly active, I hope, as development is moving ahead at a rather rapid rate. Don't be afraid to use this list to let everyone know what is going on, voice any concerns etc. Also, the perlbox forum at sourceforge needs to see more use. Shane Mason |
