The attached patch leads to the official CYGWIN version.
Without the CYGWIN-PATCHES/README would be fine.
I added the samples to our distro also.
(I sent these last year, 2004-12-01)

Hmm, I tried the old PAR.ppm from ActiveState and failed with certain 
calls: I'll sne detauls from my work address.
Newer PAR's do work fine and also have the -gui switch for pp.bat
