Hi, I am trying to use some limited functionality of PDF::Create ( the stringr method, for instance) when building PDFs based on PDF::Reuse. PDF::Reuse offers great features when it comes to using preexisting PDFs as templates, and saving a lot of hard work, but it misses a lot of the advanced functionality available under PDF::Create. Any suggestions? Is anyone using PDF::Reuse and PDF::Create together? martin -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin @ Catalyst .Net .NZ Ltd, PO Box 11-053, Manners St, Wellington WEB: http://catalyst.net.nz/ PHYS: Level 2, 150-154 Willis St OFFICE: +64(4)916-7224 MOB: +64(21)364-017 Make things as simple as possible, but no simpler - Einstein ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |

I'm sure there are others on here who can give a more qualified response, but here's my stab at it: I believe that specifying the bleedbox for the document to the actual size of the paper may help solve the problem. Part of the issue, however, may be that printers vary in their calibration of paper to printhead. But if I had to take a stab at solving your problem, the above would be my first thing to try. Hi, Thanks to all those who helped develop PDF::Create. The features and speed are amazing. I have created a PDF which is to be printed on a specific page - it is a form used like they do in high schools for multiple choice questions with the bubbles (ie. "ABCDE"). Basically, for a specific form, the PDF I create is supposed to pre-fill out some of the bubbles on the form. I do this via creating a rectangle for a particular position: $page->rectangle(485, 756, 8,8); So once the Perl script creates the PDF over the web and sends it to the client, the client then opens it up within Acrobat reader. However, the rectangles always print differently on different printers. I then have to go in and change the x and y positions for the rectangle. I am wondering why this is. I thought the point of PDF was so it would "fit exactly to page"? Any suggestions? Thank you Afra |

For what it's worth, I'm curious about the activity with this as well. I just wanted to find out whether development still is occurring with the perl-pdf pm. Also: - can the module support font size declarations? - can the module support pdf 1.4? (as opposed to just 1.2 found in the sample.pl file) |

Hi, Does this module support the creation of documents that are optimized for byte serving? I have some text reports from a mainframe I'm putting in a web interface. I'm going to make them viewed as PDF because text documents don't support the concept of a line break and people need to print these things formatted properly. The problem is some of the files are HUGE so they really need to be byte served, otherwise it would overwhelm the viewing PC's resources. -Douglas |

Someone asked for an example of using colors in PDF::Create. I looked on the SF archive of the mailing list and it supressed their e-mail address. So here it is for everybody: if ($greenbarflag eq 'grey') { $page->setrgbcolor(.9,0.9,.9); # 10% grey } else { $page->setrgbcolor(.9,1,.9); # light green } foreach my $bar (@greenbar) { $page->rectangle(@$bar); $page->fill(); } $page->setrgbcolor(0,0,0); @greenbar is an array of arrayrefs that I calculate elsewhere for making rectangles like used to be on green bar computer print-outs. Other than being somewhat bewildered by what the color model was for the first few tries, it was trivial. $page->setrgbcolor(240,255,240) chewed up lots of ink. :) -- </chris> Q. Hi: I just downloaded the latest version of perl-pdf and was wondering where to get some additional sample code. Specifically I am wanting to see how to generate the PDF to the browser instead of creating a file. The documentation says to use a handle (already opened) instead of a filename to stream the data, but it would be more helpful to see some code here. I was trying to get Landscape pages to work, so I first tried page rotation. But my $page = $root->new_page( 'Rotate' => 90 ); complained that it wanted an array ref, so i tried my $page = $root->new_page( 'Rotate' => [ 90 ] ); which complained that 90 wasn't a valid data type. I went traipsing through the code and tried a few things. I couldn't get a stack dump, so i don't know where the problem really stems from, but my $page = $root->new_page( 'Rotate' => [ 'number',90 ] ); seemed to coax the rotation through and actually work. BUT, this didn't make my pages come out in Landscape as I had hoped. Luckily flipping the last two bounding box parameters seemed to work fine. It seems a bit odd to me that Acrobat shows the page as still printing in Portrait if you go into File -> "Print Setup", but it still displays and prints in Landscape. My earlier parenthesis problem was remedied by upgrading to the SF version. (I upgraded while trying to fix the first problem above.) I tried the whole character set to experiment further. All worked well except for the backslash which I had to escape with an extra backslash. Bru-hahahaha! I'm happy. -- </chris> Neither sweat, nor blood, nor frustration, or lousy manuals nor missing parts, or wrong parts shall keep me from my task. |

I've tried passing parenthesis and backslash into $page->string() to no avail. This is the sort of thing xpdf spits out: Error (573): Arg #0 to 'Tj' operator is wrong type (error) Error (631): Illegal character ')' Does anybody know why this is and what other characters may cause a problem? I'm trying to take various ASCII texts and turn them into PDF's so I have no way to no in advance what characters may be in there. Dealing with unprintable characters was anticipated, but I'm surprised it doesn't handle parens cleanly! -- </chris> Neither sweat, nor blood, nor frustration, or lousy manuals nor missing parts, or wrong parts shall keep me from my task. |

The sourceforge version has extra features, but doesn't seem to be more buggy. However, both seem to have features which currently don't work as documented. The main difference I found was the non-sf developer answered my questions, the sourceforge hosted people didn't. I used the non-sourceforge version originally, but switched over for the images and didn't have any issues with doing so. I've been playing with PDF::Create and have a couple of (hopefully simple) questions. (1) Is it possible to get the PDF into a scalar? I realize I could suck the file back in or make a class and make a Tie'd filehandle interface. But each of those methods is messier than I'd hope for. My goal is to create a PDF within a web page on the fly. Obviously avoiding disk I/O is important, but dealing with Tie really seems like overkill. (2) What's different about the version on SF from the version in CPAN? Obviously the image support, but nothing else popped out at me. I don't care about adding in images for my current project, but if the SF version is less buggy or has other features I'll go with it. -- </chris> Neither sweat, nor blood, nor frustration, or lousy manuals nor missing parts, or wrong parts shall keep me from my task. |

use setrgbcolorstroke() and $page->setrgbcolor defined in Page.pm Jeffrey Delinck wrote: > > I am interested in getting color in PDF. I am not sure how to do it. I would be glad to put it somewhere in the PDF::Create module if someone can give me some details. All I know is that I need a ColorSpace, but those are usually defined as some binary stream???
