The normal way to do this is:
make sure the login and password are both non-null
do an anonymous bind to the LDAP server
do a search for something like uid=$login or cn=$login or whatever attribute
your server uses to store the login identifer
make sure you got exactly one entry back from the search
use the dn returned by the search and the supplied password to do an
