shift_entry

I was given some code to use to get the dn and it doesn't seem to be 
working...here is what I have:
#get DN
        $ent = $results -> shift_entry();
        $dn = $ent -> dn;
what does shift entry do? thats what I wish to know right now

Well after a search $results has an array of entry objects. Given
that shift() removes and returns the first element from an array, what
do you think shift_entry does ?
