Also make sure that reverse name resolution works.  The GUI will become
often become very slow or just hang if it can resolve IP addresses into
names.

the rules you need are to allow tcp over 2 ports--389 & whatever your admin
port is
also ICMP packets must be allowed through.

     I know this isn't exactly a perl ldap question but if someone knows
the answer it would be a great deal of help

     When you use the netscape console to administer the directory server
over the administration port what protocol are you using.
     The reason I ask is I need to have the administration port opened in
the firewall for the correct protocol.
