ldap error codes

hi folks,

recently i got this code: LDAP_LOCAL_ERROR
the ldap server is working properly, but i just can't do anything to it (add/remove entries) with my perl script.  (the script worked fine on another web server).
what is the likely problem for this?  

and also, where can i find guidelines for writng very portable perl scripts?  i am a newbie.
