All, I'm trying to see what the best way is of monitoring perfparsed, preferably using nagios itself. I'm currently using perfparsed in combination with the write to pipe method. What are my options? 1. check_procs -c1:1 -C perfparsed -u nagios this will notify me in case the daemon died. I could attach an event handler to restart the perfparse daemon. The problem with this method is that there is no way of knowing the perfparse daemon is still doing anything useful, since nagios writes to a named pipe, and this never fails. (and even then, should it fail, there's apparently no trace of the failure anywhere). This hasn't happened (yet), the daemon seems to die whenever something goes wrong. 2. write a (perl) check script that checks the perfparse_service_bin (since I'm storing in a mysql db) for new data (i.e check the timestamp of the most recent record, cry wolf if it's older than x minutes). Attach an event handler to check for perfparsed still running and eventually restarting it. In my view this is the only right way to check the sanity of perfparse. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this, or any other ideas.... Tim. |

Alexander, Thanks for your information on problems with the performance data. It=20 seems the 'quotes' are missing from the metric name on your check_nt=20 plugin, when using method 3 and 4? Our friend Jan Van der Veken noticed what might be your problem. When=20 compiling Nagios he saw this in nagios.cfg: -- begin snippet -- # ILLEGAL MACRO OUTPUT CHARACTERS # This options allows you to specify illegal characters that are # stripped from macros before being used in notifications, event # handlers, etc. This DOES NOT affect macros used in service or # host check commands. # The following macros are stripped of the characters you specify: # $OUTPUT$, $PERFDATA$ illegal_macro_output_chars=3D`~$&|'"<> -- end snippet -- If you alter this line to remove the ''''s, this might fix your problem. If you can test this, this would make a great addition to our new FAQ: http://wiki.perfparse.org/tiki-list_faqs.php Kind regards, Ben Clewett. Morning Massimiliano, Sorry to hear you have been having problems. Can you tell me whether any of your graphs display? Can you tell me if you perfparse.cfg file is correctly readable by the=20 apache system. Did you specified the location of the file correctly on compilation.=20 Eg, if file is /usr/local/nagios/etc/perfparse.cfg Did you use: ./configure --prefix=3D/usr/local/nagios Do you use the History Report? Ben answered to this mail but I'm not sure. I would like to add that you can also add your own debug log easily : FILE*logfh; logfh =3D fopen ("/tmp/my_own_error.log", "w+"); fpritnf(logfh, "%s:%d\n", __FILE__, __LINE__); fclose(logfh); With this, you have easier access to a log file, and you can put debug ma= rks before the CGI header. Please try on 0.104.2 and perfparse.cgi instead of perfgraph.cgi that was= renamed. Yves > Hi All, > > I'm trying to use the perfgraph (0.104.1), but I got "Error 500". Hi Gili, Please remember that the program name changed from perfgraph.cgi to perfparse.cgi. There have been two users before you who had the same effect. The menu would show but none of the calls which accessed the database. I know one user reported 'it just started working'. I am not sure how this was resolved with other user. If one of them is reading, please let us know :) If you use your debug, please fflush(stderr) after calling. A crash can destroy the buffer. Also if you use this debug, add it *only* after the initial header: printf("Expires: Sun, 02 Jan 2000 01:01:01 GMT\n"); printf("content-type: text/html\n\n"); Or you will get 'malformed header from script'. or 'Premature end of script header'. You can populate the QUERY_STRING from the command line, but ensure you 'su' to what ever user your http server is using to execute the scripts. You may try setting the SUID bit on the script: # chown root.root perfparse.cgi # chmod ug+s perfparse.cgi This is *not* a good way to run, but might help you find your error. Please also ensure your database details are correct in etc/perfparse.cgi and the etc directory this is located in was compiled into the program using: --prefix=/usr/local/nagios And this file (perfparse.cfg) is entirely readable by the http server user. Please let us know... Ben Gili Lapid wrote: > Hi All, > > I'm trying to use the perfgraph (0.104.1), but I got "Error 500". Hi All, I'm trying to use the perfgraph (0.104.1), but I got "Error 500". Only if a parameter is passed to the script... If I execute this cgi by command prompt I get the HTML. And if I export the "QUERY_STRING" it works goes as well... But if I do this thing by the browser I get the Error 500. This occurs in ver 0.103.2. the only version I tried this didn't occurs is ver 0.100.1. I inserted a line in the perfgraph.c to debug this (as I read in this list). ------ fprintf(stderr, "%s:%d\n", __FILE__,__LINE__); ----- this is the output from the error_log <---snip---> [Thu Dec 02 17:47:15 2004] [error] [client 10.1.1.1] malformed header from script. Alexander These metrics will be listed in the binary reports only if there is=20 valid performance data. (There may be other reasons, but this is the=20 most likely.) Can you run one of these plugins from the command line as=20 Nagios would and see whether you have any performance data? If there are any specific plugins which do not work, post to this news=20 group or nag...@li... (subscription needed) and I am=20 certain there will be a user who has a working version they can pass to y= ou. The 'STATE' for the Binary data is re-calculated based on the data from=20 the plugin. This is because there may be many metrics on each service,=20 all of which may be in a different state. The state returned by the=20 service is usually the worst of these. Have a look at the performance output of your plugins and see whether=20 this makes sense. If this seems not to be the case, please let me know=20 together with the full output from a sample plugin run. Regards, Ben Clewett. Dear users, We are happy to release the next version 0.104.1. This has many interesting additions: - dynamic libraries for perfparse-log2* and perfparsed - perfparse-log2any can load more than one storage module; the other perfparse-log2* are links, shortcuts to perfparse-log2any with one module only. - Perfparse is now internationalized, with a first French translation to be improved and others to be done (contributions welcome) - perfgraph.cgi renamed as perfparse.cgi. To avoid confusions, upgrades should remove their old perfparse.cgi. I will repeat the last change: perfgraph.cgi is now renamed to perfparse.cgi. Please delete perfgraph.cgi and change your links. Contributions will be particularly appreciated on: - translations (including improving the French one) - helping Garry on the documentation - porting perfparse on other systems than GNU/Linux and Solaris - making storage modules for other databases or RRD files Regards, PP Development team. |

Hello, I configured perfparsed to read from a pipe. (Method 4) (config below) I noticed that the CPU usage for perfparse is constantly at > 95% (sse part of 'top' output below). Without perfparsed, top reports 99.7% idle, with perfparsed, it reports about 50% idle. I should add that this is a test setup, with nagios checking only 60 services every 5 minutes (iow, perfparsed takes up a lot of CPU for doing close to nothing) the production setup checks around 600 services, so I'm a little worried. Hi Barry. You must specify a mark path in order for the script to run. Eg: Service_Log_Position_Mark_Path = "/usr/local/nagios/etc/" I do not know why your script is not running. When you run perfparse-log2db -s -r you should get an output: 00:00:01 read 14 @ 0.0 l/sec. Met 13 @ 0.93 Met/l. Drop 0. +-----------------------------+ +-----------------------------+ | Generic statistics | | | | Nb lines parsed : 14 | | Nb lines dropped : 0 | | Start date : 2004-11-25 | | Elapsed time : 00:00:01 | | Start time : 17:01:29 | | Rate : (line/sec) 14.00 | +-----------------------------+ +-----------------------------+ +-----------------------------+ +-----------------------------+ | MySQL storage statistics | | | | New Hosts : 0 | | Metric/line : 0.93 | | New Metrics : 0 | | Metrics Recorded : 13 | | New Services : 0 | | SQL Queries : 200 | +-----------------------------+ +-----------------------------+ If this is not the case something is wrong. Otherwise you may just have a very large log file. Can you tell me how many lines in your log file? Hey, Just an idea. I once had exact same problem and the reason was, that 'Error_Log' wasn't defined in perfparse.cfg, there was some other name given for it. Or the perfparse.sh script searched for other errorlog name, don't remember exactly. HTH Viljo Ben Clewett wrote: > Hi Barry, > > Sorry to hear things are not working so well for you. Hi Barry, Sorry to hear things are not working so well for you. I have moved this posing to perfparse-users where more users may be able to help you identify this problem. One reason I can think of it that the script is doing something, it's just taking a long time. I guess you are using Method 1 described in: http://perfparse.sourceforge.net/docs.php#id265256 Can you extract the perfparse command from the perfparse.sh and try running it manually with the -s and -r flags. This will be something like: $ /usr/local/nagios/bin/perfparse-log2db -s -r Can you tell me what is returned? Michael, I can see no obvious reason for this. Can I ask you to look at all parts. Especially when the systems seems to stop. Can you check that the file you are writing to is still being populated. The lines being added are valid. Please return a sample line to this mail thread. Do you delete the file on each parse? If not can you check your 'state' file contains valid data. If so can you make sure that this stage is working correctly. Can you complete the parse manually by extracting the command from your script: $USER2=/perfparse/installation/directory cat ${USER2}/var/perfdata-service.log | ${USER2}/bin/perfparse-log2db -s -r -c ${USER2}/etc/perfparse.cfg You can add the flags '-s -r' which will give you extra verbose output. If you run the parse manually, does this work? Do you use MySQL for Nagios? Do you run the check_mysql plugin from Nagios to monitor your database? (You may need to symbolically link the mysql.sock to /tmp/mysql.sock for older plugin.) Does this show the database in good state when data is not importing? Please let me know, Ben Michael T. I'm using Method 3.. I'm not actually seeing anything in the logs perfparse related. Perfparse will work fine for Xdays, but then if I don't look at it for 2 or 3 days, it will just stop graphing.. There will be a 2-3 day gap in the graphs, and then once I start looking at it again, it 's as if it's gotten the attention it wants and goes back to graphing.
