Answer to myself:

From a mail from Ben:
Can you check your nagios.cfg and look for this line:

illegal_macro_output_chars=`~$&|'"

If it exists, please change to:

illegal_macro_output_chars=`~$&|"

(You plugin is correct to the specification, but Nagios is not correct to it's own specification :)
