Hii.. I downloaded perfctr-2.6.40 from http://user.it.uu.se/~mikpe/linux/perfctr/2.6/, my linux kernel is: 2.6.32, My OS is CentOS 6.2 As per Install file first did make mrproper After that I patched the kernel using the update-kernel script in perfctr directory. Then I configured kernel with CONFIG_PERFCTR=y CONFIG_KPERFCTR=y CONFIG_PERFCTR_VIRTUAL=y CONFIG_PERFCTR_GLOBAL=y I compiled it as: make this process reports error: drivers/perfctr/virtual.c: In function ‘sys_vperfctr_control’: drivers/perfctr/virtual.c:585: error: implicit declaration of function ‘set_cpus_allowed’ drivers/perfctr/virtual.c: In function ‘vperfctr_get_filp’: drivers/perfctr/virtual.c:1054: warning: the address of ‘vperfctr_file_ops’ will always evaluate as ‘true’ make[2]: *** [drivers/perfctr/virtual.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [drivers/perfctr] Error 2 make: *** [drivers] Error 2 Do you have any idea what's the problem? and how to fix it? Are the fixed function counters considered as > i-counters(interrupt) only ? (please don't top-post in Linux-related mailing lists) (and please don't trim cc: lists, I added perfctr-devel back) Fixed-function counters can be used in interrupt-on-overflow mode just fine, but only in the virtual per-thread counters API (see examples/self/ and examples/signal/). The driver for global-mode counters only allows plain accumulation-mode counters, which is why examples/global/ only considers accumulation-mode counters. > As for the virtual pmcs, what I understand is that if I use 0x40000000 > (IA32_FIXED_CTR0: address 309H), the 5th virtual pmc will be used (I have 4 > general purpose pmcs in Intel westmere). Is it correct ? No, there is no such restriction. You can make virtual counter 0 a fixed-function counter and virtual counter 1 a programmed-event counter, by setting up pmc_map[] and evntsel[] appropriately. The only restrictions on the virtual counter indices are that: (a) they're consecutive from 0 to n-1, and (b) the accumulation-mode counters come first, followed by the interrupt-mode counters. Before you invest too much into perfctr, can I assume you've looked into the perf_events stuff that's in 2.6.32 and newer kernels? I know some perfctr users have expressed disappointment in perf_events (mostly related to higher overheads and a more complex usage model), but as perf_events is "standard" and perfctr is not (and never will be), it should be used by default unless you have a very good reason not to. And if you use PAPI you shouldn't have to care which low-level mechanism is in place. |

Can anyone > give any hint on how to do it in /example/global/global.c ? Uncore counters are not supported. Fixed-function counters have been supported since perfctr-2.6.29 released 2007-10-07 (the perfctr-2.6.29 CHANGES entry gives some indication on how to use them). I don't recall if any of the sample programs under example/ uses them, but basically you use pmc_map[i] to map virtual counter i to physical counter 0x40000000+j, and you set the relevant Enable/INT/CPL flags but no event selection bits in evntsel[i]. |

Hi all, I am currently using perfctr-2.6.42 in Linux 2.6.32 kernel. I checked the example in example/global folder and was successful monitoring the general purpose counter events (4 PMCs in Intel Westmere). Is the uncore and fixed counter events supported in perfctr now ? Can anyone give any hint on how to do it in /example/global/global.c ? Thanks, Jia |

Version 2.6.42 of perfctr, the Linux performance monitoring counters kernel extension, is now available at the usual place: http://user.it.uu.se/~mikpe/linux/perfctr/2.6/ Westmere processors are now explicitly classified as Westmere not Nehalem as before. This is needed because Westmere apparently lacks a few events that were in Nehalem. Version 2.6.42, 2010-11-07 - Classify Westmere processors as Westmere not Nehalem. - Update update-kernel to install arch-specific header files in arch/$arch/include/asm/ for newer kernels. Also make update-kernel --test trace file installation steps. - Update usr.src/Makefile to use the LD make variable rather than plain 'ld' if set. Useful for cross-compilation and builds with non-default target options. - Updated kernel support: 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 (RHEL5). / Mikael Pettersson (Mik...@ro... or mi...@it...) |

Version 2.6.41 of perfctr, the Linux performance monitoring counters kernel extension, is now available at the usual place: http://user.it.uu.se/~mikpe/linux/perfctr/2.6/ Version 2.6.41, 2010-06-08 - Extend examples/perfex/ to allow users to set up values for the OFFCORE_RSP MSRs on Nehalem-based processors. - Add driver support for OFFCORE_RSP MSRs on Nehalem-based processors. - Recognise more Nehalem-based processors (models 30, 37). - Renamed PERFCTR_X86_INTEL_COREI7 symbolic CPU/PMU type constant to PERFCTR_X86_INTEL_NHLM, since it denotes the entire Nehalem family not just the (original) Core i7. The old constant is also defined for now, to not break source code compatibility. - Correct Core i7 event setup in examples/global/ to actually work. It was rejected by the driver due to a copy-paste error. - Rewrite the missing event list message in `perfex -l/-L' to indicate that this is a user-space library omission, not an issue with the driver or the hardware. - Updated kernel support: 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5, 2.6.18-194.el5, 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 (RHEL5). / Mikael Pettersson (mi...@ac... or mi...@it...) |

Hello, I have downloaded the latest version of perfctr, v2.6.40. I see in the patches directory that it supports RedHat Enterprise Linux kernel 2.6.18-164.el5 via the file "patch-kernel-2.6.18-164.el5-redhat". My question is, can I use that patch file with the a newer, bug-fixed kernel like the ones that are available from RedHat: Jan 06 2010 22:09 75660747 kernel-2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.src.rpm Jan 06 2010 15:34 75613765 kernel-2.6.18-164.10.1.el5.src.rpm Dec 09 2009 19:16 75608874 kernel-2.6.18-164.9.1.el5.src.rpm Nov 03 2009 09:56 75513971 kernel-2.6.18-164.6.1.el5.src.rpm Sep 28 2009 09:08 75483865 kernel-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.src.rpm Aug 19 2009 00:00 75420211 kernel-2.6.18-164.el5.src.rpm In other words, can I apply the patch to the latest kernel, 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 ? These updates often contain important security fixes in them. Thanks, Russ |

Not all architectures are supported yet, but ppc64 (and POWER7 specifically) are supported. The most recent release of PAPI will configure itself to use this built-in support if it finds it available. I suggest you try it out. I've added my team member, Corey Ashford, to cc since he's been much more involved in this than I have been and could probably answer any questions you may have. > > -Maynard |

Hello, We recently acquired a modest size IBM POWER7 cluster. We're running RHEL5 with a 2.6.32.7 kernel. I downloaded the recently released Perfctr v2.6.40 and found out that there is only support for PPC32. I was wondering if there are any plans to release a version of Perfctr for PPC64 arch. Thanks. All PAPI Users - After much too long a wait, Component PAPI, or PAPI-C, or PAPI 4.0.0 has finally arrived. The inaugural release of Component PAPI represents a significant architectural change from PAPI 3.7.x and earlier. As such, your application must be recompiled and relinked to libpapi, the PAPI library for this version to work. PAPI-C is backward compatible with earlier versions of PAPI. All new library features are supported through new APIs and all old APIs still work as expected. Applications instrumented for PAPI should continue to work as expected with no changes. The major change in PAPI-C is the support of multiple components, or counting domains, in addition to the traditional hardware counters found in the cpu. The goal of this first release of PAPI-C is to provide a stable technology platform within which to explore the development and implementation of additional components. Although a small number of components are provided with this release, the major objective has been to guarantee that PAPI-C works at least as well as earlier PAPI releases and on the same range of hardware platforms. We think we have achieved that goal. One new addition to PAPI-C is internal support for IBM BlueGene P. IBM's previous patches are now integral to the PAPI code base, making future support and development more viable. Although there is no compelling reason for satisfied users to upgrade from PAPI 3.7.2, the PAPI-C branch is the one that will be supported in the future. You'll need to do it sometime; you might as well upgrade now! Visit the PAPI website at http://icl.cs.utk.edu/papi for more information. For a summary of changes, read the PAPI 4.0.0 <http://icl.cs.utk.edu/viewcvs/viewcvs.cgi/PAPI/papi/RELEASENOTES.txt?rev=1. 21&view=markup> Release Notes. And for installation instructions read the <http://icl.cs.utk.edu/viewcvs/viewcvs.cgi/PAPI/papi/INSTALL.txt?rev=1.42&vi ew=markup> Installation Notes.
