I installed Peekabooty on this machine with Win NT
4.0 SP6a (+IE4.01SP1) yesterday, just to find a
totally unworkable system on the next boot (this
morning): the RPC and TCP/IP NetBIOS helper
services couldn't be started, and there was a delay of
about a minute when opening an Explorer window or
dialog or changing the directory in Explorer,
additionally no web browser would start because of
some missing entry point in kernel32.dll. Restoring a
registry backup didn't help, uninstalling Peekabooty
didn't either, but at least I saw that during the
installation some system files had been replaced.
Eventually I found them: their file date is June 8, 2000
and they seem to come from Windows ME (at least
some of them). The file names are msafd.dll,
mswsock.dll, oleaut32.dll, tapi32.dll, ws2_32.dll and
ws2help.dll. After replacing these with the versions
from SP6a everything works again (phew). All the
troubleshooting cost me two hours, though.
So if you're using NT 4.0, please beware.

Thank you! I wound up having to remove my HD, install it as
a slave on another PC and replace the dll's listed above.

You can also search for mv.exe. Download that, it will
replace the files at next reboot.

booty.org... does it work or not? some clearifying could help...
