Resurrect pdq

The pdq program is a straightforward, flexible, queueless, print subsystem. It is a simple replacement for lpr, lp, lpq, lpstat, and lprm.

The features include: modular driver and interface support, jobs can be monitored through completion, job status can be checked after completion, users can only print files of declared types, users can define their own printers, multitasking (with no queues to get clogged), scripts can be embedded in the rc files, custom command-line options, and root privileges are not required.

It includes various printer drivers and device interfaces. It supports AppleTalk, BSD LPD, efax, and direct to hardware.

Thanks to Foomatic, under PDQ you can use every printer which you can also use under CUPS or LPRng.

A mailing list for pdq has been created. It is hosted at the sourceforge site.

Also the old 2.2.1 version of pdq has been imported into the CVS.

Some of goals include: committing pdq improvements from Debian, FreeBSD, pkgsrc, and Puppy Linux packages. And maybe also add gtk2 support (already available).

If you are interested in using or developing pdq, please join the mailing list.
