No

The "set ... as default..." functionality is unreliable:
- Right-click on a text file > Open With > Open With
- Select geany, leave "Set selected application as default action of this type of file" unselected, and click OK.
- Geany will now be the default action for text files! (this is not expected)
- Repeat, but select leafpad instead of Geany.
- Geany will still be the default action for text files. (this is expected)

This issue has been around for as long as I can remember.

Default behavior is to use last application that was manually selected if you don't set default one explicitly. If you set some as the default (either in that selection dialog or in File Properties dialog) then it will be used always until you change that. I.e. that option means "set default instead of last used" and last used has priority in no default is set. The last used isn't remembered when you just take it from context menu list but only when you select it explicitly in "Open with..." dialog.

I would like to see contents of your file ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list, please. Thank you very much.

Oh, I think maybe I was actually clicking on two different files with slightly different mime types, one of which had had the default application explicitly set, and the other hadn't.
So many different text mime types...

    Sorry for the noise.
