Yes: in ./toc.pclasses.make.at there is a line near the top commented 
out, with -fPIC on it. Uncomment it and reconfig, then you'll be 
okay. :)

Normally i ALWAYS include it, because the Debian team REQUIRES it on 
libs (don't know why).
