[DHG] Paths of Power -------------------- Key: NEWSOURCE-127 URL: http://jira.pcgen.org/browse/NEWSOURCE-127 Project: New Source Issue Type: New Data Source Development Components: RSRD (3.5E) Reporter: Andrew Maitland Assignee: Andrew Maitland PUBLISHER: Distant Horizons Games Contact: Paul Melroy Gamemode: 3.5 Initial Data Monkey: Andrew Maitland COMMENT: Source is available to the public for free by Author. Paths of Power presents an alternative system for creating spell lists, allowing characters to experiment with unusual combinations of abilities, to specialize in particular fields, or to dabble in many. Each spellcaster will have spells related to their class, to their race and philosophical outlook, and to whatever magical fields they've studied. At their most basic, Paths are simply a system for researching and selecting spells in themed groups, rather than on an individual basis. Even at this basic level, stripped of the advanced options, this serves to enforce real distinctions on characters as they go up in level, giving each spellcaster an individual repertoire and style. Spontaneous casters generally gain access to more spells using paths, but must choose them in larger blocks - and so cannot "cherrypick" the most useful or broadly-applicable spells. Secondarily, limiting or providing specific paths can enforce a campaigns theme, allow less-combative spellcasters to operate effectively in combat-heavy games, or add flexibility to over-specialized casters.
