I see horrors on the forum and in e-mails everyday :( These are the 2 most common mistakes I see: ********* Its vs It's ********* "Its going to be sunny tomorrow." This is INCORRECT. It's is the contraction of It is: "It's going to be sunny tomorrow." This is CORRECT. "What's that? I can't remember it's name." This is INCORRECT. Its is a possessive pronoun that modifies a noun: "What's that? I can't remember its name." This is CORRECT. Source: http://www3.telus.net/linguisticsissues/commonerrorsinenglish.html And: http://www.apostrophe.fsnet.co.uk/ ********* Apostrophe ********* The rules concerning the use of Apostrophes in written English are very simple: 1. They are used to denote a missing letter or letters, for example: I can't instead of I cannot I don't instead of I do not it's instead of it is 2. They are used to denote possession, for example: the dog's bone the company's logo Jones's bakery (but Joneses' bakery if owned by more than one Jones) ... but please note that the possessive form of it does not take an apostrophe any more than ours, yours or hers do the bone is in its mouth ... however, if there are two or more dogs, companies or Joneses in our example, the apostrophe comes after the 's': the dogs' bones the companies' logos Joneses' bakeries 3. Apostrophes are NEVER ever used to denote plurals! Common examples of such abuse (all seen in real life!) are: Banana's for sale which of course should read Bananas for sale Menu's printed to order which should read Menus printed to order MOT's at this garage which should read MOTs at this garage 1000's of bargains here! which should read 1000s of bargains here! New CD's just in! which should read New CDs just in! More common mistakes: http://dsv.su.se/jpalme/english-mistakes.html And: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_spelhomo.html -- Charles A. Landemaine. |

Dear all, Just to introduce myself, my name is Gerard van Essen and I'm now responsible for the PC-BSD Documentation Project. I am Dutch, live in the UK because I'm married to an English girl and have a little girl of 2 years. Work wise, I'm not working for an IT company ;-) but for a mortgage bank. As most of you will be aware, it has been fairly quiet on the PC-BSD Documentation Project front. Thanks to Kris' hard work, PC-BSD has been going from strength to strength, but the documentation has been lingering behind. It's now time we put together some proper documentation for our (future) users to make them "feel at home" quickly. We need to concentrate on updating and adding to the Wiki and the FAQ's. There's also the PC-BSD Quick Guide that Charles has worked on that needs finishing. (http://www.auriance.com/docs/pcbsd/documentation/quick-guide/). Plans are to ship this guide with PC-BSD when it is finished. A few things that need to be done or need to be looked at are: - Quick Guide: As said above, this guide needs finishing. I think this is a priority, and it would be great if we could ship this with v1.3 - FAQ We need to add more questions/answers and update those that are out-of-date Browse the PC-BSD forums and put often recurring (newbie) questions in the FAQ - Wiki: Explain general Unix concepts (what Unix is, how does it defer from Linux, user/wheel groups, su etc) Explain related to KDE, i.e how to change your desktop background, how to change the colour scheme, how to download and install stuff from KDE-look.org Check Wiki and update/correct where necessary. Create some step-by-step tutorials (e.g. setting up a new printer using cups, running windows software using Wine etc) Creation of PBI 's I'm sure there's still loads of other things that we could add, so if you can think of any, just email me. I'd like to create a roadmap for this project, so it would be great if you could let me know how you'd like to contribute or what you're planning to do. Doing it this way will avoid duplication. Looking forward to working with you all. Gerard ge...@pc... |

It has been really annoying me that even when you type in a title with a space, it still shows it as one word when you open the document. Is this an inherent problem with pmwiki, a bug, and is there a workaround? -- Michael Yurko |

I have corrected some questions from the FAQ that needed to be corrected. I added some new ones from the open questions and from the forums. I am going through it again and i will begin to put them on shortly. If you have anything to add please let me know. If you are working on something else let me know again so we don't make any duplicate efforts. If you are not working on anything and you want to help here is a list of thing need to be done: 1)Howto's for the wiki. You can look through the forums for problems that people are having or you can write down of you went by solving a problem you had. Write down details. A lot of people who read the wiki are new user and they are not familiar with BSD. 2)Tutorials explaining simple concepts of UNIX might be nice. For example you could write down about users groups and permissions. We have some people who are not familiar with these concepts. 3)More questions are needed for the FAQ's. 4)A thread in the forum http://www.pcbsd.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=524&highlight=compatible+hardware lists peoples successes with different hardware. We can take the list and put it on the wiki and update it when necessary. 5)Keep an eye on material allready in the faq/wiki. Things some times need updates/corrections. 6)Bring in new ideas. Some suggestions: Keep the rest of us informed on what you are working. If you use someone else's material put a reference for it. Screenshots are ok but try to keep them small.
