Where are the saved files? I've tried File Explorer in Win 10 and searched on all files in my PC and can't find files I created. I created and saved 3 test files. Their names are: try, program, and hereiam. I would assume they are saved as try.bas, program.bas, and hereiam.bas? but I can't FIND them. :(

    HELP appreciated!

Hi Linda, they should be in your home folder, probaly called something like C:\Users\Linda. See also here http://robhagemans.github.io/pcbasic/doc/#location-for-basic-programs

Unfortunately from searching the internet it would seem searching for files in Windows 10 simply doesn't work, in general - unfortunately that's not something I can help with.

      Hi Rob!
Thank you for your quick and kind reply. :)
I 'did' the %USERPROFILE% cmnd to get to the c:\Users\Linda prompt but cannot find the "prog.bas" test files I saved. I opened EVERY file, carefully, in that folder page, and nothing. I then did a cmnd prompt, and tried entering different things in it, like "pcbasic," "PCBASIC," "run pcbasic," and anything else I could think of, but got nowhere. I can easily run pcbasic from my PC by double-clicking the shortcut provided during the install, but can get nowhere locating the saved .bas files My test files DO load and run in pcbasic on my screen so I KNOW they are accessible, I just can't FIND them. Win 10 File Explorer cannot find any thing with a .bas extension.
What on earth can I do? I so badly NEED to use your prog as my old Borland Turbo-Basic, which was 16-bit, won't run in Win 10 64-bit. :(
Thank you for HELPING, and THANK YOU, THANK YOU for bringing PC-BASIC back to life!

    Hi Linda,

If you open the file explorer and type %userprofile% in the quick access bar you should see the folder where your files are saved.

This works for me on Windows 10 - if it doesn't work for you, I'm afraid I don't know why not...

    Hi Rob,
Thank you for trying to help! Your effort is appreciated. :)

I have Win 10 Home, Version 1709, and OS Build 16299.192, which I think is the very newest?

First, if I right-click on the Win 10 screen icon in the lower left, and click 'File Explorer,' and enter %userprofile%, I'm taken to "Linda." I see MANY folders. None of them has a name on it REMOLTELY connected with PC-BASIC, .bas files, data files, or anything at all similar. The closest folder I see is called "AppData," and opening IT leads to 3 folders, one of which is named "Roaming" and has a "pcbasic," (lower case), folder in it. One of the items inside is named "PCBASIC.SAV"and it is filled with 'gobbledegook.' I try reading it with various utilities, like Notepad, etc. but can't. :(

What is the name of the FOLDER OR FILE YOU see in your PC?Perhaps it is at the END of your "This PC" path and has the name "Rob?" Maybe I can find it in mine? :)

Now, If I right-click on the Win 10 screen icon in the lower left again, but this time click 'Search,' and type in %userprofile%, I'm taken to "This PC > Local disk (C:) > Users > Linda.

It is the SAME "Linda" as above, and is at the end of the path starting at "This PC."

I want SO MUCH to be able to USE basic again!

    Thank you,

    Linda

Hi Linda, your .BAS files should be directlyt under the Linda folder - there will not be a directory called PC-BASIC there. The folder in AppData\Roaming\pcbasic contains settings and is at the moment not important.

By default Windows hides the file extensions, so that a file named PROGRAM.BAS will show up as Program only.

You can also try making sure Windows shows all hidden files (as here: https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-show-hidden-files-in-windows/). Maybe your version of Windows hides these types of files, I don't know.

    Hi Rob,
Thank you for your kind help! I appreciate it so much, and WANT to use PC-BASIC, but I can't use it fully w/o being able to FIND the .bas files I create and run are stored. :(
I'm attaching 2 .jpg files. The image "Hidden Items.jpg" shows that I have the boxes you mention that let hidden files to be shown IS checked. The 2nd image, named "File Explorer Options.jpg" also shows that "Show hidden files......" is indeed checked.
I have a Win 10 Home 64-bit PC using the latest MS "Creators Edition." It is Version 10.0.16299 Build 16299. This option should soon be what all win 10 Users will run. If PC-BASIC does not work properly on it, thenNO new Win 10 User will be able to install PC-BACIC and use it as you want them to. If it won't work properly on MY PC, why should it work on theirs? Perhaps SOME Users could care less if they can't SEE where there files are stored and edit them easily, but I do. I need to be able to SEE my saved files.
In addition to fully complying with the "hidden file" requirements in your note above. I also entered %USERPROFILE% in "search" and it brought up this page: "This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Users > Linda." The file extensions for some files shown ARE displayed, while, of course, folders do not have extensions. They files I see are named: ".Plays.tv, NTUSER.DAT, and phonon.log." One I don't recognize is named ".recently-used.xbel."

PLEASE try to figure out WHY I can't "see" my saved files? I now have several .bas files "saved" SOMEWHERE. :) They all run inside of PC-BASIC but cannot be found in my up-dated version of Win 10 64-bit. They are hidden inside of a "black hole" maybe? :)

Thank you so much forhelping and for your WONDERFUL program! :)
    Huggs,
    Linda

I'm sorry, I have no idea.

Can you post a screenshot of your home folder and of the output of the FILES command in PC-BASIC?

Did you make any changes to the configuration file PCBASIC.INI?

        Hi Rob,
Thank you for helping! I hate to be a nag. :( I'm sure you have tons of more important stuff to do. :)
I am attaching a screenshot of my home folder.
I did not, knowingly, make ANY changes to PCBASIC.INI That would likely be the worst thing I could do, right? :)
I started using GW-BASIC around 1981, and then 'up-graded' to Borland Turbo-Basic about 1986. I've written TONS of programs, and many in the microwave engineering area, ones and I sold on-line for many tears under my business name. I contribute info abou them and about microwave engineering in general, to the SETI groups under the name "Linda Latte." At one time I was a consultant to NASA at JPL and designed receivers for the Voyager program, and high power amplifiers for SIR-C orbital missions.
Sine my 16-bit Turbo-Basic is not supported by "new and improved," HA! PC's I am out of business. But, I could use pcbasic to still do things. :) Thanks to YOU !!
I really NEED to find my .bas progs in Win 10 so as to more easily edit them. They HAVE to be SOMEWHERE?
        Sincerely,
        Huggies. :)
        Linda

oh oh, I forgot to take a pic of the DOS window after typing FILES at the prompt. BUT, I can SEE most of my .bas progs listed, but I can't see the top 1/3 of the window, nor scroll UP in DOS.

          Hi Linda,

The reason I wanted to lok at the screenshots is to compare if the directory of FILES and the home folder are the same folder. If they are, the files are hidden somehow; if they are not, it's a different folder. From the contents of FILES we might be able to see what directory it is.

If you type the command "files" in pc-basic and hit enter, and it displays your filenames then you have everything inside pc-basic set up correctly. If you have not changed the pc-basic settings, the files should be in your home folder. If you use windows exporer to navigage to your home folder you can use the "Search" feature of explorer on the top right of the window. If you type a filename in it it will search your home folder for any file matching that name. If you see one of your files listed then right click on the file name then click on "Open file location" towards the bottom. Then it will open the folder where the file is located and you can see where your files are in the address bar of explorer.

    Hope this helps.

      Hi Daniel and Rob!
If I run pcbasic, it opens its DOS window, as it should; if I then type FILES, many lines of file names appear, AND some of my .bas files appear, but not all, as there are more files in the folder than will show on my 24 inch monitor. 1/3 of MY .bas files are HIDDEN up above and, if they are there, and I assume they are, I can't see them. Naturally, there is no scrolling of the DOS window so I can't see the top 1/3 of the list.
Now, if I type %USERPROFILE% in Win 10 'Search' and go to my home folder, and THEN, using the search box in the top right corner, and type in a .bas file of MINE, it is NOT found. NONE of my 5 current .bas files show up in 'Search.' Since they do not, I cannot edit them outside of pcbasic, and tHAT is not good. :(
My .bas files HAVE to be SOMEWHERE in Win 10 and outside of pcbasic, shouldn't they?
      Thank you for helping!
      You guys are the BESTEST!
Huggs and kisse, (on the cheek),
      Linda

    Hi Again, Rob and Daniel,

It just occured to me, are both of YOU using the very newest Win 10, the same as mine, that I identified in an earlier post? Mine is Win 10 Home 64-bit PC using MS "Creators Edition." Version 10.0.16299 Build 16299.
If not, maybe THAT is the problem? Perhaps when PC-Basic is installed on MY Win 10 OS, the install program fails to direct the .bas files to my "home" folder?

    Linda

I don't know. I use Linux on my home machines and can only use Windows 10 sporadically on a machine that is not mine. So this is not something I can try. But I don't think it's this specific Windows 10 version as I haven't had any other reports of this problem and I can't find anything on Google about Windows suddenly hiding files.

        Hi Rob:
Thank you for your reply. Nutz, PC-BASIC then is almost useless to me if I cannot access and edit my .bas files in Win 10. Perhaps you have a friend who uses Win 10 64-bit Home? M$ (Microsoft), now FORCES Users of the Home version to regularly up-date. It is NOT a "matter of choice" anymore, like it used to be. I cannot "shut-off" up-dates. I have what they call the "Fall Creators Up-Date." Whoopie, huh? It appears that your install routine no longer works correctly for M$ Users. :( It seems I'm at the end of my rope and will have to give up on it.

It is so sad. I need your program very much. :(

        Thank you for trying,
        Linda

Also, do you have the environment variable %HOME% defined in Windows? If so then that may be where the files go.

              Hi Rob,

I brought up a COMMAND PROMPT, typed "SET" and hit "Enter." There is no "HOME" listed among the many environment variables. The closest I see is "HOMEPATH=\Users\Linda. If your install routine uses %HOME% maybe, just maybe, it should use %HOMEPATH% for the newest Windows 10 Home 64 Bit PC's? Interesting, huh? Here is the URL I found the info on: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3234-environment-variables-windows-10-a.html

              Thank you,

            Hi Rob,

Here is the output of the FILES cmnd. I see no "scroll bar" on the far right, so I hope all of it is there, and the top part of the list is not "lopped off?" :) All my .bas files are in it.

            Thank you,

Ok, that looks like it's the folder under Program Files where PC-BASIC is installed. How do you start PC-BASIC? Do you use the command prompt or the Start Menu shortcut?

      Hi Rob,

I use a 'shortcut.' Here is the 'target' of it: "C:\Program Files (x86)\PC-BASIC\pcbasic.exe" If I bring up a DOS Prompt and type "pcbasic" I get the following message in the DOS window:
"pcbasic is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
But, what would how I "start" pcbasic have to do with where in Windows my files are stored? :)

      Thank you,
      Linda

Ok, so as per above, I think your files might be in the folder under Program Files where PC-BASIC is installed, i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\PC-BASIC. Could you check if you can see them there?

    Hi Rob,

I'm up-loading THREE screen shots of ALL files inside the PC-BASIC folder you mention. There are several folders INSIDE this folder, at the TOP, but NONE of them contain my .bas files. Let me know if you want me to open EACH folder at the top and screenshot its contents, huh? My .bas files are nowhere inside this PC-BASIC folder.

If my .bas files WERE inside this folder I'm sure they would have been found when I typed ".bas." or my full program names, into M$ 'Search?' Since M$ 'Search' cannot "see" the .bas files anywhere in C: I suspect they are hidden 'inside' pcbasic somewhere, and that the Windows install routine for PC-BASIC failed to set up a folder, or or a space for them in C:\Users\Linda ?

Such a mystery, huh? Altho you may not be a Windows User, MOST of the world is; more people use Windows than any other OS, and all Win Users worldwide WILL be using the SAME version of it that I am, in time, if they're not using it now. This is true because M$ FORCES up-dates down the throats of all Users whether they like it or not. :( There is one exception: I am a Win 10 'Home' User, and I'm forced to up-date within about 24 hours. Users of the more expensive versions are given a little more time, but most Win 10 Users have the 'Home' version.

    Thank you for trying!

    Linda
