No idea - could be anything: graphics card, RAM, swap space, virus scanner. A new i3 may even be faster than an old i7. Some laptop CPUs slow down when they're not connected to mains power. I suspect it may be something to do with graphics acceleration. No way to say, though, really.

Thanks Rob, my laptop is an Alienware and the work PC has no graphics card so I'm stumped but the difference is about X5. The work one has 2Gb RAM while mine has 16Gb. The work PC is incapable of running most PC games that are 10 years old while my Alienware handles anything.

I have written a simple Conway's Game of Life program. When I run it on an Intel i3 at work it is much faster than on my home i7. Any reason why ?
