Instead of writing the backup file always to /tmp/something derive a backup
name from the pcb file name (if the pcb file name exists, otherwise use PCB.%i.save
in the current directory).  This should make it easier to find the backup
file for a particular layout and also helps in cases where /tmp is not
appropriate (windows).
