Matthias, I've been looking through existing packages of pbbuttonsd and came across Mandriva RPMs. They carry some patches with script fixes. I don't know if they were brought to your attention because they are rather old. Changelog for haldaemon: - add modified patch from Ubuntu to stop/start haldaemon at sleep - update: be sure hal is down before sleeping (still looking for kernel fix...) Changelog for laptopmode_supermount: - ignore remounting of supermounted devices (if you're supermounting ext3/reiser/xfs you are not be able to use laptop-mode to its fullest extend) apm-compat patch: test returns always true First and second one could probably considered distribution specific. The last one should have been really gone upstream. Regards, Frank |

The machine suspends and after wakeup you got the kernel panic? If so then it isn't a pbbuttonsd issue because wakeup is a kernel only issue. You could try to unload the USB driver before entering sleep. The USB modules had some problems with sleep in the past. If this doesn't help, post a message to debian-powerpc or the kernel mailing list (see kernel.org for details) with detailed data about the kernel panic and your machine. > And the other question I have, is how can i see how much battery is > left using pbbuttonsd... Currently there is no special battery monitor depending on pbbuttonsd. You could use any battery monitor out. I use gkrellm-pmu for example. If you like to read the IBaM time predictions from pbbuttons there is only the command line version available yet: > pbbcmd query TIMEREMAINING But I will patch gkrellm-pmu in short term to provide the IBaM values in a nice way when available. Best Regards Matthias |

Hi, First of all, happy new year! I'm getting kernel panics using kernel 2.6.14.5 and pbbuttonsd 0.7.3 on my Ibook. I'm not sure if the cause of my kernel panics is it pbbuttonsd or not, but i relate them to it because the computer kinda suspends, then i press any key and it says at the top of the screen: failed on setting volume. Then the kernel panic says it will reboot in 180 seconds... And the other question I have, is how can i see how much battery is left using pbbuttonsd... Thanks a lot in advance. Greetings, Mauricio. |

Hi all, I'm using an external apple usb keyboard on my ibook G4, but sound/eject keys do not work if I plug the keyboard after pbbuttonsd is started. It is possible to make something about that ? That's bad news but sometimes it must happen. The LMU detection (that's the i2c device that controls the ambient sensor and the keyboard illumination) in pbbuttonsd is quite a hack. I don't have the appropriate hardware at hand so developing a better solution is quite difficult and I need someone who is willing to help me with testing. As first step you could send me a copy of your OF device tree: tar -czvf device-tree.tgz /proc/device-tree In the meantime you should remove i2c-4 so that pbbuttonsd wouldn't hang. A better LMU detection function is on my list but as already mentioned this will take a while. Would you help me with testing? Best Regards Matthias |

Hi all, On my new Powerbook5,8 i'm finding that all versions of pbbuttonsd that I have tried (0.6.8, 0.7.x) seem to hang trying to open the /dev/i2c-4 device on my powerbook5,8 running gentoo. I have both the i2c-dev and i2c-keywest modules loaded, and if i2c-dev isn't loaded, pbbuttonsd starts ok. Here is the tail of a quick strace: stat64("/dev/pmu", {st_mode=S_IFCHR|0660, st_rdev=makedev(10, 154), ...}) = 0 open("/dev/pmu", O_RDWR) = 8 stat64("/dev/adb", {st_mode=S_IFCHR|0660, st_rdev=makedev(56, 0), ...}) = 0 open("/dev/adb", O_RDWR) = 9 open("/dev/i2c-4", O_RDWR) = 10 ioctl(10, 0x703, 0x42) = 0 read(10, pbbuttonsd will sit there forever, and even if I give it a kill -9, pbbuttonsd will stay until I reboot, and i have tried recreating i2c-4 using mknod. I know of another pb5,8/gentoo user who has this issue too. cheers, Andy |

I decided to replace my Debian install in favor of Gentoo. After getting my system up and running using gentoo-sources kernel 2.6.14-gentoo-rc2 pbbuttonsd was working great, all buttons and backlight control worked great. I decided to upgrade to vanilla kernel 2.6.15-rc5 so I could try out the airport extreme card drivers recently released. They work great, for anyone wondering, but to my real issue now. After upgraded to kernel 2.6.15-rc5, blankscreen still works, but the keys to control the backlight, sound and eject don't work anymore. I used the same .config from my previous kernel, and doubled check to make sure everything was enabled. Anyone have any ideas? Could the keymap have changed so fn+f1 and so forth show a different keycode. I tried out showkey but can't get it to output anything besides a 0xXXX value. Does the XXX corrispond to the normal XXX in the pbbuttons config? Thanks for your help. |

I guess you are not using the proper framebuffer. With recent kernels you have three possible framebuffers: 1) offb: This is a fallback which provides only minimal options. There is no brightness control available 2) rivafb: This is the old driver which is at the same time the only one usable on ppc ATM. IIRC it is not compiled automatically on recent kernels anymore. I'm using it happily on 2.6.13. 3) nvidiafb: This is the new implementation which is compiled normally. It is buggy on ppc, so most times it doesn't take over on boot time and leaves offb in place. This is what happens on your machine I think. I heard benh submitted some fixes for this one to be included in 2.6.15, but I did not test them yet. So, just to be sure, could you post the output of cat /proc/fb on your machine? Make sure you use rivafb, and all should be fine. You should have a look at showkey in console, it tells you the keycode of the key you pressed (wait 10 second to quit). Those are the keycode used by pbbuttonsd, check that they match your settings in /etc/pbbuttonsd.conf. I use LCD_IllumUpKey = 60 + ctrl LCD_IllumDownKey = 59 + ctrl but you might have other keys. > Also when I set > pbbuttonsd to blank my screen on lid close this does not work. Hi, I released a Beta of the upcomming pbbuttons 0.7.3 and request your assistance to test it and tell me about anything weird you will find. The Beta could be downloaded from: http://pbbuttons.berlios.de/ IMPORTANT: Compile PBButtons with '--with-ibam' to enable IBaM and read the IBaM chapters in the man-page carefully. It needs some preparations to unfold it's full power. Create a directory /var/lib/ibam in which IBaM can store its data. This directory is not created by the installation script yet. The upcomming relase will get a new time estimation algorithm. This new algoritm leads to amazing accurate runtime predictions on battery. Also battery warnings will be very accurate and reliable. If it says you have 10 minutes left, you _will_ have 10 minutes left. Battery aging will be continously tracked so that the time predictions will be accurate over time nevertheless how old the battery is. Adjusting battery warnlevels in a configuration file is yesterday, IBaM is now. Intelligent Battery Monitoring uses statistical and linear adaptive methods to estimates the time remaining on battery and also the time until batteries are fully recharged. Nevertheless it works already very well, IBaM is still beta software. Please test this version and give me any feedback you think is usefull. Best Regards Matthias |

Hi, I'm sorry, this mail might be totally off topic, but I didn't manage to find a real user-related linuxppc ML and didn't feel like posting on linuxppc-devel was a good idea. The new info is that I can't get my back light on my lcd to change. It just stays at 0 but my lcd is as full brightness. I know for a fact that this worked even before benh got sleep working on ibook g4s with radeons. I am replying to a post on this list from a few days ago. I too am having the problems with making my iBook G4(800MHz) go to sleep under Ubuntu Breezy with pbbuttonsd 0.7.1. The thing is, the problems only started happening after a fresh reinstall of Ubuntu Breezy. Before this past Saturday I had been running a copy of Ubuntu Breezy that was upgraded from Hoary. On that previous install suspend to ram worked perfectly and out of the box(well not really I had to add a line to my xorg.conf). So I'm very confused about why the "same" system would not work. In theory both systems should be exactly the same, even up to the software level. I made no changes to my hardware, I was just repartitioning to get more space for MacOSX(apparently you can't really run it on 10Gigs and do real stuff with it). Also, I was under the impression that sleep on Radeons had been supported since linux 2.6.8 or there abouts. Going with the kernel in both breezy(2.6.12) and hoary(2.6.10), I still get the same results. I'm slightly confounded by this as I know for a fact suspend was working up until I reinstalled breezy from scratch. If anyone has any ideas I would be very appreciative, but otherwise I'm going to try installing hoary and dist-upgrading to breezy to see if that fixes it. In all honesty I know that shouldn't fix it, but I know for a fact I had suspend on my previous install. Thanks. - -- Scott Henson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDciwCr2exNrjonJARAuuYAJ9P7MN0+01zbG/P6F8qJzs2//OIFgCeOUVr TQsfhbffEyfgQwH1yMZdcbY= =B+5A -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

Hello all, i have a little problem with pbbuttons and kernel-2.6.14: With kernel-2.6.13.4 brigthnes control with Fn+F1/Fn+F2 works fine! After updating to 2.6.14 Fn+F1/Fn+F2 wont work. The funny thing is, that without pbbuttons Fn+F1/Fn+F2 works. After starting pbbuttons, the brightnes controll stops working! Any suggestions would be fine! Bye Thorsten |

Furthermore often a i2c device= is missing. Check if you have a device called /dev/i2c-4. If not a mknod /dev/i2c-4 c 89 4 might help. Best Regards Matthias |

Hello! I have a powerbook5,6 15" recently bought. Mi message is about keyboard backlight ilumination which does not like to work. I have installed pbbutto= nsd | gtkpbbuttons-gnome | powerprefs. I have the kernel modules to run sensors (i2c-dev and some others). When running powerprefs, in the "bulb tab", the "keyboard" and "Autoadjust" tabs appear in grey (not accesible). How can I do to run keyboard's backlight? I read about the daemon lmud but I don't know how to get and install it. Can anybody help me?
