I had this happen, starting with vanilla 2.6.14. I found (by reading
debian-powerpc) that one or both of the uinput and evdev modules aren't
loaded by default anymore, and that this affects pbbuttonsd. After
explicitly loading them, pbbuttonsd works as expected.

I didn't do any additional experimentation, though, so it may be that
only one are needed.
