In the new version of PBA, version 1.1.0, the client CD is based on a newer version of Insert. Please give it a try. In the long term, I hope to collect enough information from the community to determine what single live CD would support the most hardware out-of-the-box. In my research so far, it appears that the kanotix distro is good with hardware support & detection, so that's what I will be evaluating when I have time. In the meantime, one technique you can try is to boot up with your live CD of choice and then do this.
Try using a USB NIC. The linksys USB NIC, more specifically is compatible. Let the system boot from CD, then insert the NIC -- hotplug will then autodetect. You will need to enter ip info manually (eg: ifconfig eth0 up, ifconfig eth0 192.168.ur.ip netmask 255.ur.net.msk)

wget http://\[pbaip]/pba.sh
sh pba.sh
The live CD does need to have some supporting files (e.g. dialog), but most live CDs do.
