When starting Password Safe, no database appears in the "Open Password
Database" prompt. The single database that I use IS a drop-down menu choice
but it doesn't appear by default. I'm using version 3.23 and running Windows
    7.

Odd. If it's in the dropdown, then it should be in the default as well.

    Try the following:

Open the database, close it via File->Close, then fully exit PasswordSafe via
    File->Exit.

If the problem persists after the above, I'd like to know:

    1. Is this a clean install or an upgrade from a previous version of PasswordSafe?
    2. Did you select 'Green' or 'Regular' install (assuming you used the .exe installer program)?

Thanks much for the quick reply. Tried the suggested steps exactly with no
joy. This was a clean install on my new Win 7 system although the database was
from a previous Win XP SP2 installation. I used the "Regular" install. I've
run Password Safe for several years with no problem so this is odd indeed.

Just for fun, I tried exporting the db and opening that - same thing.

I have a similar problem with Password Safe v3.25 on Windows Vista Home Basic.
The work-around I used was to manually edit
    c:\users\mitch\AppData\Local\PasswordSafe\pwsafe.cfg and add a <currentfile>
entry under <preferences>. (Location and format taken from my XP box - see
below.) This does the trick, although it doesn't get updated if I open a
different database. But it suffices if you only use one database.

The program does update pwsafe.cfg for other options, including recent files,
so I know it has permission to write the file.

The same version of Password Safe works correctly on my XP machine, but on XP
I have the environment variable PWS_PREFSDIR pointing at the same location as
my databases (c:\data\password safe) - which is not the location of the
executable. (I don't know if that's relevant, but it might be.)

This may be due to the new security functions of Window 7. Please make sure
that there is not a pwsafe.cfg file in the same directory as the PasswordSafe
application (pwsafe.exe). This directory is probably "C:\Program
Files\PasswordSafe" on 32-bit Windows systems and "C:\Program Files
    (x86)\PasswordSafe" on 64-bit Windows systems.

If it is there, please delete of rename it when PasswordSafe is not running.
You may lose your preferences but these can always be re-entered.

Please report back if this solves your issue.

One thing to note is that if you close the database before then ending
PasswordSafe, the current file entry in the configuration file is not updated
and so will remain empty if not previously filled.

To ensure that it is updated, exit PasswordSafe (File menu -> Exit or right
click on the System Tray and select Exit) with the database still open (you
may be prompted to save or discard any changes not yet saved).

Tried mitchames' solution of adding the <currentfile> entry and IT WORKS!
    Thank you!!

Glad that worked but I would be grateful to know if you still have a
pwsafe.cfg file in the same directory as the application (C:\Program
    Files\PasswordSafe).

    Many thanks

Did not previously (afaik) and do not now have pwsafe.cfg in the application
directory (which is indeed C:\Program Files\Password Safe). The cfg file is in
    C:\Users\Steve\AppData\Local\PasswordSafe.

    Cheers,

    Steve

I mentioned earlier that v3.25 worked fine under XP (and failed under Vista),
but that appears not to be the case. On XP it now does not remember my new
"current database" if I open a different one. I'm not aware of any changes to
my configuration (described in my first post).
