Problem 2 normally happens when the SMTP server settings aren't right. Version 2.3 added support for TLS/SSL - this is required if you wish to use GMail as the SMTP server (not if you just want to send e-mails to a GMail account). It's largely up to you. You can uninstall first if you wish. If you don't, the new version will replace the existing version, and keep your settings.
