Hi Russell,

I read the license of the project but still not sure if I get it. Should I release the python srouce code if it is called by pam-python? I don't modify the source code of pam-python. I will redistribute pam-python in an appliance.

The copyright holders grant you an additional permission under Section 7 of the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3, exempting you from the requirement in Section 6 of the GNU General Public License, version 3, to accompany Corresponding Source with Installation Information for the Program or any work based on the Program. You are still required to comply with all other Section 6 requirements to provide Corresponding Source.

Thanks,
Jubing

When you distribute you must acknowledge you are using pam-python so people can download it's source code. (A "licenses" web page in the applicace would suffice.) If you write a PAM module using pam-python you must release it's source code too, so everybody who uses your applicance can download it.

The situation for a program (eg, "login" or "apache", or anything you write) calling a pam-python PAM module via PAM's API is a bit less clear - but as far as I am concerned, you don't have to make that program's source code available.

The clause you quoted doesn't relate to that. The GPLv3 bans systems from using programs like pam-python if others can't run their own software on those systems. GPLv2 did not do ths.) The canonical example was TiVo, who locked down their hardware so you could not run your own software on TiVo. But it also impacts things like Google's or Apples app stores because you can't run software on an iPhone unless Apple gives you their permission. Similarly you can't release software on Google Play without Google signing it with their secret key. The clause you quotes is saying that restriction doesn't apply to pam-python, so for example if you wanted to release software that uses pam-python on Apples app store, you can.
