#1 bug in character display

- there is often not enough characters values for the
number of variables (ie. there may be 50 variables but
only 48 character values)
- after some tracking, it seems from case 1 (where
there is a space between the variable name and the "="
sign, some variables are being skipped - there aren't
enough counts in the loop i think.
